The Omaha Bankers on Their Mettle. For some days past there have been ramors abroad to the effect that there were to be several new baunk buildings erected in Omaha during the coming season, but until Friday nothing defin- ite has been learued that could be giv- en the public. A Bee reporter called to-dsy upon the representatives of the different banks, and ble to state the facts as received from headquar- ters, On Tuesdsy last the lot occopied by Saxe's drug store, corner of Farn- ham and Fourteenth, was purchased by the State Bank. This lot has a 22- foot frontage on Farnhem znd ad- joins & lot of the same size, which the representatives of the bank de- sired to purchase also, but have not yet completed the bargain. Mr. Murphy stated to our reporter to-day that if this lot was secured they ex- pected to erect thereon during the coming summer a fine building, three stories high, suitabl :for their purposes. If the lots could not both be had by the bavk they would not build. As t0 the general design of the bank nothing was known except that it would be such as to suit their needs. for some time to come. Our reporter next called opon Mr. Hermau Kountze, of the First Ne- tional bank, who, in response to his inquiries, #aid that they should build this upon the cor- nor at present occupied by them. It was their iuteution to take out the east wall of the present bauk, to take in the adjoiniog lot, and to builda good eubstantisl building thereon. He Qid not expect to make it very fine perhaps, hut would add third story aud make it such as to be what they had need for some timeand would be s falr building. R Mr. J. H. Mullard, of the Omaba National baok, said that it was true they had been after the same lot pur- chased by the Stite bank. They have one or two other good sites in view, and if they could secure either one they would build daring this sum- summer out of the market.
