Last Sunday afternoon, says The Brooklyn Eagle, the saperintendent of a Sundsy school out in the Black Hills_happened to be visiting some riends in Brooklyn, snd, on invita- tien, attended the school services of one of our popular Methodist church- es. Invited toaddress the children, he declined at first, but finally con- sented, and to illustrate the welcome of the sinner to repentance related the following anecdote: T reckon most of you young men have hearn about that old feller in Egypt, which was well fixed for kids. The o!d man was heeled clear to his neck, and thar wasn't a dip nor spur that he wasn't onto, and you bet he had his squar dose of sheers in_every pay-dirt claim on the divide. He was a good old man, straight asa rifle bar’l ard without knot, rot or woud- pecker hole from root to crow's unest For a long time he nad been fuil owner o’ an_eighty stamp mill, and travelers in them parts seen the smoke ricing from his chimoey pretty steady, and they knowed quartz was grinding and the dust was good. There wara't no funny business about the old man. He knowed prime wash irom salt by the color, and it wasn't long before the boys quit stealing his mwules and set right down to the levels and picked for trade. They knowed he'd straddle any blind, but he dealt fair, and they respected him Well, children, the old man bauked a heap o' quartz. He had a big rauch, and the sheep in it was as thick as miners’ tents. Thar was antelope, and pratri chickens, and jack rabbus, and blacktail deer, till you couldn’t rest And thar was Lots of wheat and & big shack built o’ logs, with a parlor In one cod. Now, [ tell you, that tisr old man was fixed up to the trap, and don’t you forget nothing. But ons o’ his sons was kind o' restless. He wanted for to prospect for himself. The old man give hum the racket strai:ht from the hip; told bim not to .oake a doggone fool of himaeli. Stay where he was. Thar was more money in & stamp anll thao thar was in mines, and he advised the kid to locate right there. Why, chiidren, that thar old wman kuew from the fust sour that th» short didn’t have no show, even for tailiugs, -nd what's tailings, even if he played o win, '~ a squar divide on the regu- lar wash?" “bu. the kid wanted long grass, so the old mau staried him and gave bim nis blessinz, and toli him for to al- ways deal level with the tabls, and never lata man get his elbow behind his kidney on him, and so the boy got away. Fixed straicht to his hair. 211 the dust he wan ad. Best advice s oy ever got. What do_you think he dial He went broke. I never kuew whether he got into a game whar they played straighte, or whether soma fel- low held over bim a squar desl, bat he went clear to the bottom o’ his sock, and struck bed rck. Clean up, dead gone. Ths yield dido’t psa & cent to the tou. Gulch dried up Dips crossed his angles. Blind leads fetched the only vein he kad, excant one, but that he didn’t kn_w of. He was d gaing for yellow in black rock and couldn’t see the glory that was waiting for him to acsay and coin. es, you bet. Thar thet Dor boy, without money enough to buy 2 box o’ matches, was driviog where thar wasn’t even pyrites, whilo all the sky was pouring out the best color ever panned, aud he couldn’t get on toit. Well, thar was only one thing to do. Prospecting was no_use. So he went down on a ranch and told the ranchmen he'd keep the coyotes off the pigs. You know what an orncry derued thing a pigie. You've got to kill him and smoke him and throw him away and forget him before you nd yet that thar young mau hived right down with them pigs and drawed, when it was hia turn, and if he got a fair hand o' slucks he was goose on his luck. Bimeby the racket got too stiff for him, and he kicked. He made up his mind that he would flock back to the m:ll and strike the old wan for another e. Did the old mau go back on him! Well, not for coln. _ Did he say he wasn’t hiring any new hands, but the kid might get on to work at Hamilton Hollow} I reckon mot. Says he, ‘Put it here, pard, and he just fell clean over him. That's style. That's from the origin. Thet ain’ Thet thar old man fetched out a buck- skin trowsers, and anautelope shirt, and some tuffalo boota and a camp bat, and drawed the young feller right in. Khi How's that! Gitting you now, am I} Begin to hood on to my racket! Know who the old man was} Yes, you bst your life, and he's wait- ing for you to pass out on a bobtail and for you to come to him and be fitted outand started in the stamp mill again like you never hopped the ti-ra-tu and hooked out from under the family umbrella. Let up and be saved. For 1 tell you, children, the lower level gets awful hot sometimes, ad if you can do placer work with the sky right around you, keep away from the tunnel business, for thar's no drawing after the bet. I'd like to have you sing » bymn for me that wo sing in i do you kuow it?” And to the astonishment of the local superintendent they did know it, and he couldn't stop it. Spoopendyke’s Calls. THE NEW MINING RBGION. The great regicn of country known as Wood river was an unknown, uncx- plored portion of the earth twa years ago. A little over two years azon company of prospectors started oat from the Yankee Fork country to ex plore the headwaters of Salmon river | ! for voldand other metals. In their travels on the Salmon they found the dead body of an Indian and o few very rich leads of silver ore, which to- dayare being worked by large com panies, and are producing larze quan- tities of rich ore assaying 300 to 3000 | ¥ ounces per ton. A few of the restless ones of the party did not stay long in the newly discovered region but soon were on the road to & coun- try still more unknown ¢ them than the other had been. two days’ time they hyd made the summit of the Sawtooth mountains and camp-d on the Wood river side of the range, wiere Galena City now stands. They oamped_there several days to pr.s peot. They had not beea out a d»y b fore they brought in large lumps of galenacre. Thia caused great excito ment in the party. They made nine locations and all started back to Yau- kee Fork. There they had their vari- ous wamples of ore sssayed, and, to their good fortune, it run up into the huadreds of ounces of silser, with 60 or 70 per cent in lead. This nows caused grest excitement in the whole country., Every one that had a horse started without delsy to find a fortune. It being very late in the they had to retarn on account of deep anow. Belleview soon began to look something like a town. Men were not tobebad to work at any price, as all that ‘were able were out prospecting. In the course of a month there had been many claims found on the lower river, from which hundreds of tons of ore have been sent to various markets. Belleview has about 600 inhabitants.
