M§AY1:30 p. m. sewerdsy the Omaba sleigh riders left for their second trip to Council Blufis. The procession formed at the corner of Farnamand Foureenth, headed by Mr. D.T. Mount, left for the Towa shore. The expedition num- bered two hundred and thirteen slelghs and was enthused by the strains of the baod of the Ninth in- fantry, secured for the occasion. All the finest rigs in town were out and many of a more primitive charaster. There were ten four-in-hand teams a1d several driven tandem. Waving flags and pampas plames decorsted a majority of the horses, while numerous fantastic out- fits added to the interesting appear- ance of the procession, which was over two miles long. At the river several drivers returned, the ice un- der the effect of the rscent thaw not appearing safe to them, but there were enoogh left to make » creditable ap- pearance, and for an hour the river bottoms on the other side were black with moving vehicles. An immense crowd lined the street snd sidewalks on Farnsm to witness the extraordinary display. A special four-horse rig was provided for the represeutatives of the press and thalr wives. Among the curious outfitswae that of A. J. Simpson, of the carriage repository, which was constrccted of an empty crockery crate. The fire de- partment was represented by the Hook and Ladder team, driven by Jim O'Brien. The party was in high spirits in expectation of a jolly time. Our readers will remember the de- talls of the arrest of Edward Parker in this city a few wecks ago, on the charge of robbing the United States mail. For years Parker resided in Merrick county, where he was county | —— clerk, and which conty ho also repre- ssnted in the leglelature in 1873, when | he was known as the “longhaired Parker’—the huster of the plains. The Lincoln Journal of to-day con- tains the following account of his ar- raignment for sentence, before Jadge Elmer 8. Dundy, of the Unitec States court, which took place yesterday: The court, addressing the defend- aut, said: Mr. Parker, there is the case of the United States against you, which T wish to dispose of this morn- ing. If you have anything to say I will hear you. Parker—I have ‘honor. The Court—I have known you for many years—how long, T cannot well remember—and I never heard of any charge againat you of a criminal na- ture until the commission of this of- fense. A large number of your old friends and prominent citizens in the | county where you lived have sent a petitton here asking that the punish went inflicted on you be made as light as is consistent with the ends | of justica. You have been in the | military service of the government, | entering the army when quite 8 young man—a mere boy in fact—and faith- | fully dircharging your duty in the service, When that has beea dove I always tako the fact into considera nd largely for the reason that a the army is placed where temptations are constantly thrown in his way, and where his fall may be easy. Lotters have been received hero informing me that you have sufferod as much while you have been away, trying to escape from the punishment due your act, a8 any criminal tribunal could icflict upon you. That may be true, aud probably it is troe. The law unier which you are indicted vests considerable discretion in the court in the infliction of punishment. For stealing or misappropriating mail matter to the value of $25and up wards, the imprisonmeat is to be for & term not exceeding three yoars; when the value of sald matter is less than §25, then the imprisonment is t0 be not more than one year, and the fine not less than $10 nor more than 8200 That 1s the law, and the in- dictment charges you with stealing property of less value than $15. Under the cireumstances of your case, therefore, and also considering tho nothing, your ta d thres days. F. C.
