Tho gang of robbers and dospera- does which visits Omaha periodically from the headquarters cn the other side of the river is apperently open- ing its regular winter campaign. There have been very few serious caces since the appointment of a detective by the mayor, to keep the city straight, until Saturdsy night, when he bold robbery at Visscher's block was accomplished. As will b seen ssewhere, a part of the plunder se ured at occasion has already boeu recovered in Couscil Blufle, shero it probably all is honzed away. Monday a boldor gamcfwas played but which did not panout very big, except in the way of destruction of roperty. The ecene of the gang's operations this time was the office of Louis Bradford's lumber yard, at the northeast corner of Dougls and 9k siroets, This place is rather remote from basiness houses and from dwell- fage, tco, and & raid on it could be made st leisure as no one would be prowling around at night time in that part of town and the office is geners closed at 5 or 6 o'clock in the evening. Nothing was heard during the night iadicating that auytbing unususl wes golng on at this office, but this morn- ing when Mr. Bradford came down he found his eafe, & good one of the Hall Safe and Lock company’s make, blown all 20 pieces and the office ip a state of confasion generally. Tnvestigation proved that the burg- lars had entered the room by s north side door, which had been nailed up on aceount of the cold weathor, but which they had forcod open and broken. The safe being the ok ject of their expectations they began work on that by drilling s small hole with a dismond drill Just beneath the knob on the door, and to the loft of the combination. They ovidently knew theic business well, as this was tho only hole they had to drill. A heasy charge of powder must have ben put iu s the explosion blew the safe door into & hundrel pieces and 1aid the ineide wide open. Tho heav- fest picco of the door was thrown ageinst a caso with doors, containing books snd papers, demolishing it, and shattering the wizdow above it by the coucussion. The castings flewinevery direction, lesving marks of their force everywhero they struck, The tele- phone was immediately over the mfe, and it slone of the surroundings was not injured. Even a cob pipe, which laid on the window, was split in two by one of the pieces of flying iron. The small box inside, contalning tho money, was pried out and carried off still locked. It con- tained only 83 or $4 in emall change, which, with a noto for $40, was all the plunder obtained. A package of valuable papers was torn open, and from the bloody marks left on the wrapper it is supposed that one of the gang must have been hurt, The wreck was ono of the most complete ever made of a safe, but Mr. Bradford congratulatos himself having removed to another, rafer place about $300 in gold and bills, just before closing up for the night. All the thieves got was in nlckles and small coins. About 10:30 yesterday an_slarm of fire was sounded from box 17, No. T'sengine house, and the telephono brought in news at the same time that & cottage in North Omahe was on fire. The Hooks and engines 1 and 2 were promptly eut, and after a long run from the Sixtew h street house, the department was in time to 810 & very great drstruction of prop- erty. The fire proved £ be in the attic of the handsome one-story ect- faze owned snd occoupied by Mr. Lyman Ric It was first dis- covered in an unoccupied chamber fitted up in tho attic story and seeme3 to have caught under a bed. There had been no fire near the spot for some time and it did not catch from any flue s there is noze nearer than the rear of the house, whilo the firo broke out aboct tho middle of the main structore, on the south side. The alarm was given by tho ladies at home and was taken up aud repeated from the engine hiouse as stated. The frniture, carpets and fixtures were all £a; i 1y removed end a stream of water d on the fire, which soon averted danger. There was a considerabls portion of the interior wood work and rafters burned and the ceilings of two or three £oma yed by water and th sz, but the damnge will not probably ex- ceed 8300 or $100. The house and con- tentswero, wounderstand, fully insur ed. Fortunately, the piano, which stood in the front room was greatly expos- od, for that alone of all the furniture it was impossible to remove. It was taken off its lege, etood up edgewiso aud covered with blankets, and fs pro bably not hurt at all. The worst part of the whole affair is the disorder in which things are nat- urally left after such a econo. One hundred miles north of Omaba, o tho line of the Nobrasks division of the Chicago, St.Paul, Min neapolis and Omsha railway, is a doep, nsrrow cut, curve shapad and about eight hundred feet in length. This cat is situated within the limits of the Omaha Indian reservation and about one mile south of Middle Creek. It appears that the continued wieds and stormy weathor had caused tho cutto fill up almost as rapidly 28 it was cleared, so that to keep the road open, it was necessary toput a gang at work in it at frequent, intervale, Yesterday morning Con- ductor Carnes was ordered out from Oakland with a gang of twenty-five men and a train of dump cars, to work on the line in the viclnity of this cat. After working uatil noarly time for the south bound train to pase, tho work train was ordered tou siding about a mile from the cut. The down train from Sioux City was behind timo aud approached the cut at a high rate of speed, which was ineroaced to twenty-fivo miles an hour as it plunged into the cut sup- posed to bo somewhat obstracted. A blinding cloud of snow thrown up by the plow on the passenger engine hid tho track from sight, but when a ehort distsnce from the mouth of the cut, perhaps half way throogh, tho oceupants of the cab wero horrified at secing tho windows stained as by A SHOWER OF 100D, and at the samo time discovered that sum. thing wa: clogging the whoels of the lccomotive and cars. A Nemaha County Merchant’s Horrible Fate, Oaused by Ead Luck in Busi- ness Ventures. The community about the two quiet villages of Aspinwall and Nemaha Gity, Neb., was startled Sunday after- noon about 4 o’clock by the unexpect- ed announcement that William Tid- row, & prominent and respected mer- chant, had committed eufcido by hanging. Aspinwall is situated about three miles southeast of Nemahs City, and Mr. Tideow had for many years been a resident of Nemaha county. He owned the only store in Aspinwall, carried a large stock of general mer- chandise, and consequently his trade was very large, Anticipating a still larger trade this winter, he ordered goods beyond his financial ability. The result was & closing out by his creditore, principally those at St. Joe. This secmed to bear heavily upon Mr. Tidrow's mind, and evidently brought on the wretched thought of suicide. About one week ago the first at tempt to take his own life was made by taking a heavy dose of morphine, liysician was procured in time ife. After thefirst at- | umed & state of set- tied mcloncholy the result of which was a second successful attempt of seli-destruction. Just after dinner on Saturday, he very quietly loft the house and made his way to the chicken house, whero it appears, he had made | arrangements for suicide by banging. Mrs. Tudrow, his wife, happened to go to the coop on an erraud, a little later, and tound her husband suspended, a frightful spectzcle, and quite dead. With rare presence of mind sho rush- od into the house and scured a knife, but on returningand takinga second look at her husband’sghastly body, sho fainted away. No alarm wos given until Mrs, Tidrow became con- scious again, when of course all sssie- tance was useless. The cntire surrounding country is very much shecked by the sad event and the loss is regretted by innume ablo fricnds, The coroners inquest was held yesterday and a verdict found in accordance with the facts. He was the one who afterwards died in the car, aud his body and that of the only sur- vivor of the bloody casualty were taken to Oakland o the train, and a messenger dispatched for the work tralu, which soon arriyed, and the remaining numbers of tho ill fated crew, so frightened and and horrified a8 to be soarcely rational, gathered up, with GROANS AND LAMENTATIONS, the remains of their comrades, and placed them on the train, by which thoy were conveyed to Oakland. Conductor Her- man avd the crew of the passenger train were wanted as witnesses, and the train was tent into Omahs in charge of & new set of men. From the etatements obtained from the passengers it would appear that the men who perished were alone re- sponsible for their fate, and that they did not kuow the danger to which they were subjected.
