How the Day Was Celebrated in Omaha, A Season of General Rejoicing. Christmas day has come and gone, and we have another whole year now in which to look forward to its next adven*, and when told that the day for the completion of the water works and sewer system is coming, to sy, “So is Christmas!” The day was goverslly cclebrated, ard while we shall endeavor to condenss into cur apuce the list of its festivitier, we can give but the barest details and leave the story of each to be woven to an interminable length by the happy p r- ticipants. ST. PHILOMENA. The Christmas ceremonies at St. Philomens’s cathedrai were very in- teresting and imposing. High macs Christmas morning was celebrated by the Rev. Father McCarthy. The main slar was clegantly trimmed with evergreens and illuminated with hundreds of wax tapers. To the left of the Virgin's altar wasa crib, repre- sonting the birth of the Saviour. Jacob Hauck,ink and water color ar- tist, received a painter’s palette of gold embossed with the paiat colors aud inscribsd as the flrst. A very fine 20x24 inch portrait of Master Ed- die Davie, was presonted to Mr. Davis from the studio. Dr. Scherer received afine album. Mrs, May Caunell, a sister of Mr. Mitchell, received o many elegant gifts that it is impossi- ble to enumerate them, but we bave a photograph showing them all to- gother, and it looks like a view from Max Meyer's store. And, by the way, that is where the pins mentioned above wero manufactured,and they are fine specimons of the jewclers srt. Tho desertion of furnishings, pastor and people was occasioned by thecom- pletion of the basement of the pew church of the Holy Family on the corner of 17th and Tzard streets, in W] work, the energies of both pastor s flock, have for some time been bent. In this basement, therefore, on Christmas day, snd for the first time, the religions exercises of the church were held. The attendance atall the masses was particularly large, especi- ally at that of 10:30 o'clock. At that hour high mass was sung by Father Quion. The sermon on the gospel of theday was delivered by the same gentleman, and wes a calm, earnest and practical exposition of the spirit of “‘peace on earth to men of good will” which Christ came to establish on earth. The choir sing Stocklin’s mass in B flat, the parts of which were rendered by the following ladis and gentlowen: Soprano, Miss Cerin da Knight; alto, Miss Sallie McDer- mott; tenor, Messrs. 8, J. At Alpens, Mich., yesterday morning the thermometer indicated 35 degrees below zero, and at 11:20, just at time snowatopped falling here, the wind changed from south to north, and the temperature fell 13 degrees in 10 minutes. This was ‘he quickest fall recorded at the government signal office in the past 18 months. The wind has been blowing from twenty five to thirty miles an hovr. The temperature last evening at this point, at the last observation, was 4 degrees below zero. At 5:45 o'clock this morning the wind was blowing from the northwest and the temperature was 8 degrees be- lowzero, At7 a. m. it was 9 degrecs below. At Davenport this morning it was five dogrees below. Last evening tt that place the temperatura was 26 de- grees above, showing a fall of 31 de- grees in eight hours. At Des Moines it was two above last night and seven below this morn- ing, with high winds. The barometer at this signal stution now stands higher than it has been this month, while the thormomoter is’ the reverse.
