INDIA RUBBER PRODUCTION AND HOW IT IS CARRIED OX, uS DESCRIRED 2T A xaTIVE. The following de:cription of the Tndia rubber tree, snd of the manu facture of ludia rubber, was written by Col. A. R. Berrira Labra. an enter- crchant of the Rio Parus which paper it is The Pioneer Praat _The ‘Seringoeira” is a tall, perpen- dicalar treo with little foliage, grow- ing snd thriving on low land in a deose forest of perpetual verdure. It attaina a hight of frem twenty to forty motres and a dismeter of about one wetre, but generally less. The leaf at a distance looka like that of the ““Moniva” onsceount of itslength,divi- sion and color. It falls daring the month of September, the summer sea- som, but sfter fifteen days the tree fsc'othed with new foliage, The seed 18 very similar to that of the “Mamo- na," Bat is smailer and containa oil of the same nature. The sap of the tree is a8 whito as and of about the con- sistency of very rich milk or very poor cream, and from this is prepared by and of the smokeyof burning “de coco” (drled palm nat) an elast'c sub- -tance well known thrangliout Earope and Awerica as “‘India rubbr,” but calied bere *“Borracha” (a leathern bottle) ou accuunt of the form it tak, as prepared for market, An infiotty of usesand application for this material ad the products of its menufucture gives a rich and valuabloreturn to the produc:r, aud a constantly increasing demand tends to custain the high prices raling ia the principal markets of Europe and America &3 well as at Tia extracim ard prepa- ratifh may be conzldered even to-day a new induetry, as well as an inex- haustible eource of wealth, The rivers Madeits, Juvia, Xinqua snd Purns, s well ss othcr sfflueuts of the Amazon, have b-en slready ex- plored and worked vo advantage. The Purns, to the distaiice of 600 leagues, with fta faany lakcs and tributaries, produces this tree abundantiy, and its forests have been already explored for the distance of 900 mules. Each laborer, man ¢r woman, no matter which, can collect daily fr.m eleven to thirteen; pounds of Line rubber, w: rth six:y-two cents_per pound, and thore are some whoextract from seventeen to to twenty-two pounds. T'ie aversge prodaction is_aboat 1,000 pounis to each pe:son, but thero are men why have made doubls thatanoliut daring the ewasuB. ‘ihe danger of des rac- tion to this fouutain of wealth exists in the ignorane and recklessness of the workmen, who oiten kill the tree by careless and negleetful tappin Their emplogers take no pains to pr vent th's, ad they pay nothing for tho land or trees. 2in r-produced in HOW THR SAP IS GATHERED. At the begivning the summer the laborers commenc:s to locate them- selves amoag the seraugas. Here on ths Puras thie period is from ths last of Apriluntil Januery, but 1he pest time is from May until Seplembor, when the tree 5 heds its leaves. After tho new folisge atarts the mlk con- tains much wator, and the rubber, in relation to the qusntity of milk, is di- minished _two-thirds of ita ordinary weight. In preparation for Aad to fa- cilitate tte eolleviion of the laborers make thivugh the woods a path called “eatrads,” ora street, to the foot of each seringa tree, until they reach 80 to 120 trees, clearing sfl bushes and other obstractions around each, This is done by a large American knife, but a buch soythe would work the laborer places at ths foot -f each tree the littlS cups for oullecting the milk called “‘tigelinkas, tribu- ting usually from three to eight to each tree, according to size, until 500 *o 700 “‘tigelinkas” bave bien die- posed of. Ho ihen makes six or mord slashes in the batk of the tree with a large knife 80 that the sap will ficw. Some waste several days in this preparation, which being com- pleted on the following morniug they commence the extraztion and collec- ticn of the milk. Between the hours of five and six the workman goes out on his path with a machiduba (a very large knife), a mass of dsmp and plas- tle clay of the consistenoy of putty, and a vessel or bucket in which to col- lect and convey the milk to the smoker. Passing around the troe he makes with his knife oblique and downward gashes from the corners of the horimontal ones made before, like the lstter ¥, to lead the sap into the oup, which he fixes at the point of junction with little of his wet olay, continging the same cperations with each tras on his path unti] he reaches the last. He then immediately and very quiokly returns 10 the first, where, with his bucket on his arm, ke proceeds to empty into it the “tigelinkas” which are filled with milk, leaving them at the foot of the tres or hanging to a nelghboring one, until he has collected the milk from all tho trees. Having done this he conveys it in hsste to the smoker, who converts it into rubber and then empties his bucket into a large zinc or earthen basin. A SMOKING PROCESE. In a large earthen pot without a bot- tom is kindled with the nut of the palm tree a fire, which makes a deuse smoke that ascénds through the neck of the pot. The smoker has a wooden mold with a long handle, shaped paddle, over which he pours with a gourd a quantity of milk and then passe it over the smoka, when it ri Having complated this | like a idly hardens, leaving on the mold a filament the thickness of a sheet of paper. He continues to repeat this process until he has used np all the milk 1o the basin, which tskes about two hours, more or less, according to the quantity. The next day he makes u cut round the blade of the paddle by which he withdraws it, putting the rubber in the sun to dry. When it is well smoked it is of a dull yellow , | colr, apd when smoked a dirty White. | Nevertheiess, in_ the course of tim | both Yecome blaek. Throogh remain- | ing toolongin the smoke, or throngh | the peglizen e or want of activity in | the smoker, the wilk coagulates be- fore it ia thoroughly emoked, and this caasea the difference in the quality of the rubber as classified, ‘‘fina entre fina, and sernamby.” The “flna” is made from the milk_in perfect condi- tion, the ‘‘enire fina” when it is satur- ated and beginsto cosgulate, and the *‘sernamby” when the milk coagulates naturally, or there has fallen into it some extraneous substances, stich & water, bark and piedes of rubber, or on account of the unclesnness cf the vessels in which it is collected. Al the milk that remains in the cups afier_ emptyiog, or that fruas 'down the sides of the trees, cosgulatos and makes ‘“sernamby” only two-thirds the value of “floa ” This work is re- peated day after day, the gashes that are made in the trees at the distance of one decimetre from the ground are Tepeated; one over the other, as hig] | as 2 man can reach, and the cups are raised successively around the trees, and each change is called by the work- { men “‘reacao.” This {s usually the work of one waek. The patos, or es- | tredos, will not last over three months of steady working; therefore 1t is necesaary for the rabber gathersr to prepare two for the season. -Some make four. Here on the Purus, of { which I have been specially speaking, they always use two or more. Quick Stage Drossing. The New York fashion correspon- dent of The Cinclunati Euquirer writes that, on entering the dressing- room of an actress friend at a theatre, she saw spread out on a chair an el- aborate dress of eatin and velvet, a peculiarity of which was that all the bows and other ornaments were already fastened in place, and the garment was opened in front from neck to hem, though so contrived that the junction would not be vistble when worn. This srrangement was to avoid delay, and how the actress |mide & complete change of costume in less than | five minutes Is described as follows: | “First, she ploked up a pair of gloves |and bogan fo put them on. Then the wmaid took off seve eral pulls and a bow from h.r mistrees’ head—her hair in the previous act haying been simply drossoi—ad put 00 a more elabirato Llude wig, fast- ening it in placs with hairpias. Next the actress stood up, and the waid Bwiitly put her into the dress that had lain on the chair. Every part of it fell admirably into place, plentiful hooks snd eyes holdug all together. Standing before a full-length mirror she fiually surveyed hercelf critically; at just thre> minuteswnd a half from the stact, Half 4 minute more was employed in puitmg additioasl rouge and powder on the Fice, and then she wae feady o go on the ataze,” ——r—— The Story of an Umurelia London Globe: The Kachrichten of Basle tells a stry which may give the bold pur- chater a hint of a new method of proteoting himself against fraudulent shopkeepars, A young gentleman boavht a silk umbrella from an um- brells dealer indenitely character- ized 88 C——. The next day was rainy; the umbrel'a was put into ute, but the silk tore in six places during the first hour of its contact with the rain. The purchaser went straight to the shop, exhibited the ruined article, and demanded a sound one in itastead. O——"s silk umbrel- Ins, however, wore made to sell, not to endure use; the dealer smiled po- litely, and observed that purchasers ought to be careful when they made thelr selection. The young man took home bis umbrella, paioted around it the following inscription in big let- ters: ““This is how an umbrella looks to-day which was at O——" terdag,,’ and hired a com: to walk to and fro before C— with the opened umbrella for a whole d = ay. Fhia uoususl form of advertisement natarally irritated Herr O——, snd could not have been without a detere- ing influence upon possible castomera. C—— sont for the police, and asked them to arrest the bearer of the um- brella, but they declared that they could see no legal crime in the com- missionaire’s proceeding, and declined to takoe himt off to jail. Karly the next morning, the impertuibable umbrella carrier appeared sgain, and he kept sentinel in this mauner in_front of C——"s shop for nearly a week. At the end of this period, the shopkesper saw that he must give way, and call- ing the man, asked him to go to his employer ani say that everything hould be settled according to his her. When the bold inventor of red the the dealer offered him s sound_silk um- brella in exchange for the sickly ove. The purchaser rgresd to accept it, butadded the furth-r demand that tre dealer shoud pay the commissionaire a week’s wages, to which suggesticn he was also compelied to assent. —_— Facts that We Enow. yr If you sre sutfering with cough, cold, asthma bronchitis, con- sumption, loss of voice, tickling in | the throat, or any affection ot the throat or lungs, we know that Dr. Kixa’s New Duscovery will give you | immediate relief.
