The public is well aware that for a long time past a fight has been going on between the Atlantic & Pacific and Amerlcan Union telegraph companies. which has resulted in a reduction of tariffs from forty to fifty per cent, the Westera Union not_joining in the fight nor reducing their rates at all. Yesterday all weitern offices were in stracted to reduce their rates to the standard of other companies. This means a terrible struggle between the different companies, of which the pub- Iic generally will roap the benefit. Where Westera Union rates to eastern points were $1, they are now but 60 cents. To St. Louis, Ohica- go, and other points esst and south, where the rate was 50 cents, It is now but 40 cer ts, and to Colorado points, where tae former tariff was $1, the ratenow is 60 cents. The maximum tariff of the Western Union to all eastern and southern sities is now 60 cents, It 1s pretty generally understood that the Atlantic and Pacific Tele- graph company contemplates putting ina system of wires for local conven- ience and district purposes. This system will be one of the latest im- provements in that branch of the ser- vice, and will be of great importance and ‘value, not ouly to the business men of our city, bat to all classes of our citizens, The Council Bluffs Nonpareil in spesking of this subject and tele- graphic_conveniences in that_city says: “Manager Brown, of the West- ern Union informs us that the Wes| ern Union row have seventeen wires runniogin*o his office with five more to come. The increase of wires will necessitate a mammoth new switch board_which is now being made in New York. As soon as this arzives msin line batteries will be put into the office at thislplace and a large part of the repeating business that is now done at Omata will be here.” With all due respects to Manager Brown's statement, we are satisfied that while the wires actually run into his office, they merely pass through and are used for through business be- tween Omaha and points south, and that while Council Blaffs is & very im- portant office it can never rival Omaha as a repeating station, nor is any por- tion of the repeating business to be transferred from this pomt to that. SPEGIAL HOTICES, - Always fresh Uysters at Timrd’:; A_ Grave Joke. Late one night last week asa police officer, who has been on the force loss than a year, was wending his vay homeward he overheard men talking in an alley just ahead of him. The “‘peeler” was on the alert in an instant, and cautioutly made his way to the eatrance of the alley, and s8 the night was dark easily crept with- in hearing distance. guardian of the peace soon heard enough to satisfy him that on the night following a body was to be snatched from what was supposed to be its last resting place and brought to the city, and left at a room already prepared. After hearing this the ofticer cautiously made his way to the street and hurried homeward. Next day he confided the secret to a brother cop, and it was arranged that the two should proceed with an expressman and wazon to the city of the dead and capture the exhumers. Accordingly a tesm was engaged, and a8 the night was favorable they start- ed about eleven o'clock. The gallant. officers reached Prospect Hill come< tery; and driving to designated spot stopped the team and alighted, order- ing the driver to ramain whersho was vct 1 forther orders. Bat we muit fiow leave our friends to the tender mercies of s grave yafd; and the relentless fury of & north wind for a while, and return to the city. On the day precéding the night on which the two policeten visited the cemetary, a detective had been in- formed that a gang of professional body snatchers were in our midat, and that that night a body would be taken from tbe cemetery, by the same parties who had furnished the “stid” tor the Medlcal Institute. The de- tective having thus obtained a clew, propared to follow it up at once, and before night had engaged two reliablo men, with whom three hours sfter dark he proceeded to the burying- ground. They arrived in due time and stationed themselves in different places, and awaited developments. They were fast becoming doubtful and impatient when the express wagon stopped as described above. The two policemen, after recon- noitering, climbed over the fence and stopped agaia to take in the surround- ings. They were holding a whispered consultation, waen in the darkness near them, they discovered the form of aman not more than half a rod distant, slowly moving away. What todo they did not know, but it was evident that if anything was to be done it must be done quickly, or the game would vanish in the gloom and be out of their reach. At a given signal they bounded simultaneoualy upon their vistim and pinued him to the ground. By placing the muzzle of a rovolver to his temple they easily persuaded him to keep quiet and were about to manacle him when two other actors put in an appearanceand a gen- eral haud to hand encounter ensued. Billies, boots and fists were freely used, but things soon became 80 bad- ly mixed that it was dangerous to continue the fight, for every man look ed the same and foe rould not be dis- tinguished from friend. Saddenly some one yelled. *“Where's your lan- tern—why don’t you use {11’ Hostilities suddenly ceased, and sll at once tour dark lanterns flashed up- on the ecene of battle and five pistols came to view, held by determined hands. Then there was an awful still- ness followed by a season of uninter- rapted swesring. Thg two officers found that they had been pounding ech other over the heads, and the de- tective saw that one of his select men had been kicking him in the ribs while the other had been trying to handcuff him. 1t took fifteen minutes to explain motters, but at last they came to an understanding, and it was agreed that each one should have a hand in essassinting the villain who had perpetrated the joke, should he ever be found; and it was further agreed that each of the five victims should use their utmost endeavors in bring- ing the culprit to justice. After pick- ing up the_hats and other loose arti- cles they climbed over the fence and started for the wagon. “I'm glad you'ye got something to ride in,” said the detective, addressing the peelers. “T'm entirely played.” They stopped and hallooed for the driver, but recefved no answer. They yelled themselves hoarse and looked in all directions, but to no purpose. Fimally they found the tracks of the wagon and horse turned towards town and judging {rom the_steps taken by the horse he was doing his level best.
