Seattle Iatellivencer, A short time since, as a surveying party was prospecting and exploring the mountain pass east of Seattle for afavorable railroad route, they met with & most remarkable incident, as foliows: As the advanced flsgman ar- rived at an eminence on the divided ridge of the mountains, theresuddenly appeared before him the imuge of a msn holding a spear in a menacing attitude. The flagman was startled and retreated s few paces, and as he did eo the startling sentinel slowly eank down out of sight. The chainman called to the members of the party and summoned them to the spot. In the party was an Indisn who manifested great fright, and staied that this was the encharted mountain, called by the tribe ““Teca- beski,” or gut-sticker, for the fact that an Indian had many years before been wounded by this' e image, and that it had suddenly dissppeared after dolng the act of violence. The party of surveyors were not o much intimidated but that t.ey set to work to unearth this great mystery. After removing & considerable amount of dirt they came to the spear and im- age, which was so arranged that the cause the spear and image TO RISE OUT OF THE EARTH, and, on the removal of the additional weight, immediately sink down again, The question at once presented itself, why this arrangement? Tho liberal use of the spade soon rendered tae cause apparent. A considerable quan- tity of the goods was found cached or hidden away underneath In a very good state of preservation, and in the rocks near by were found certain let- ters written in the Russian language. Farther explorations revealed anotaer deposit of goods, but those of a blue color were found much rotten, and consequently worthless. These de- posits were found perfectly dry and well preserved, ~considering the length of time they must haye re- to contain from $50,000 to $60,000in Russian gold. ~ The whole affair has been kept very quiet, as tho discover- ers intend returning in the summer, as soon as the snow goes off, and thoroughly exploce the vicinity for the still apearthed depos Nicola Trombosky furnishes ThoIntelligencer with the following explanation of how these goods came in the mountains, A great uncle of his, Oclman by HOISTED THE AMERICAN ¥LAG In Russia. “‘My fatherfor miny years was in command of the Lady Madison, a_ship owned by Jacob Barker, of New York, and engaged in the Rus- an trade. My farher married a Rus- sian lady in the city of Cronstadt, Ruseia, a Miss Trombosky. My motn” er bad three brothers. One was ap- . Meam, 43 p m. |pointed consul to Brazil at Santa Ca- ‘Daily exospt taina, one remsined at home in Rus- sia and the third held an important TN command in Alaska, In the year 1816 my uncle was in the Russian set- tlement in Califorois, and started with a guard of soldiers to go to the Russian setilement in Alaska, over land, portly to explore the country and partly to trade with_the Indians. The party consisted of twenty five traders and twenty-seven soldiers, un- der command of my uncle, William Trombosky. Before starting he wrote to my uncle in Russia a detailed ac: count of the expedition, of whom composed, the amouut of money and g00ds carried, eto. It appears the PARTY WAS DELAYED IN STARTING, and the winter in the mountaivs came on amonth earlier than it was suppos- They went up northwest of the Cascade range of mountains for the better grass afforded for their ani. mals, When ina pass in the monn- tains east of the Sound they were over- taken by & severo snowstorm which caused them to lose all their animals, and hence they had no alternative but to cache their goods and gold as best they could, After coming ont of the mountaius the party was in s weak and exhausted condition. On their way to the Sound they were attack- od by a body of Flathesd In- dins, and all killed but two, & soldier and a packer, who, after a series of hairbreadth esoapes, a year afterward arrived in Alaska and told the story of the fate of their party and their terrible misfortunes. A party was sent out by the government to find and recover the goods and money, but their efforts proved fruitless, and af- ter a year's absence they reiurned. That deposit, of great value, has not yet boen fonnd, but remains in_those ‘mountains to some day reward whe- ever is so tortenate as to discover and unearth it.” Ericason's Torpedo Gun. Ericsson’s torpedo gun, now that it s fully explained and the errora of Is not iutended to sustain the shock of a heary charge, altogahor lghtor than other gun of itssize. From this gun s fired with a charge of gun- powder what called a tor- pedo, bat which is simpler to consider ashell, charged with 250 pounds of dynamite. ' The rage of such a shot is, of course, low, but the torpedo-boat is expected to run up to within 400 or 500 feet of the iron-clad it is attack- ing, point blank range. Its safoty at this distance from the broadside of a modern iron-clad Is secured by its speed, its small exposure and ita ar- mor plating—sixteen inches thick over its low deck. Any vessel struck _with & projectile containing 250 pounds of dynamite will b doomed. No ironclad in the world could stand such a mine, and, at fthe point blavk range proposed, hitting the hall_of & war vessel will b essy. 1t is scarcely neceasary to ssy that the great inventor has crowded his torpe- do boat with a multitude of ingenious devioes. Its engines, its steeriog- gear, sunk ten feet under water, and the apparatus for loading the gun, firing it, and clearing it of water are all proofs of Mr. Eriosson’s redund- ant skill In meeting mechanical diffi- culties. Al these remainto be proved. His experiments 80 far appesr to have demonstrated that a shell loaded with 250 pounds of dynamite cas, with a low charge of powder, be successfully fired from a gun under water. This is the first of the difficulties to be met, and experts will probably be in- clined to regard it sa the most serious. If the new torpedo bost works, the problem of cosst defense will be practically solved for every nation like our own, chiefly anxious to de fend a long coast lin South African Reptiles. Snake Story In New York News. 1 was wearied by a long day’s hunt- ing, when, close to my feet, and by my bedside, some glittering substance caught myeye. 1 ltnpms to pick it up, but ere my hand reached 1it, the truth flashed across me—it was a soake! Had I followed my first natural impulse, I should have sprung. ; but not being able to_clearly sce in what position the reptile was Iying, or which way his head was mained there. Stralning my eyes, but moving_not an_inch, I at length clearly distinguished » huge poff sdder the most deadly snake in the colony, whase bite would huve sent me to the other world in an hour or two. I watched him in silent horior; his head was from me—so such tho worse; for this snake, unlike sny other, always rises and strikes back. He did not meve: he was aslsep. Some parts of South Africa swarm with snakes; none are free from them. I have known three men killed by one of them in one harvest, on a farm in Oliphant's Hoek. Thers is a immense variety of them, the desdliest being the puff adder, a thick and compara- tively short snake, Its bite will kill occasionally within sn hour. One of my friends lost a favorite and valu- able horse by its bite in less than two hours after theattack. It ia a slug- gish reptile, and, therefore more dau- gerous; for, instead of rushing away, like its fellows, at the sound of ap- proaching footsteps, it half raises its head and_hi A Mute Man Speaks. The East Portland (Oregon) Tele- gram gives the following account of the manner in which one of the mute iomates of the insane asylum near that city suddenly recovered his | speach: For years Mr. Anderson, a dumb inmato of the ssylum, has plodded alongattending to his duties as a trusty, faithfol belng, unsble to speak o word. - Ho war always In roadiness to ausist the keepers in any way within his power, in & cheerful and contented manner. Al efforts tobring back the use of his vocal or- gans, which had been silent for many years, were In vain, and he was told that he could never again speak. OnSunday last the inmates were given a romp n the handsome grove, which urrounded by » high wall, in order to sun themselves. One of the inmaes, a rather wild individusl, imagined he was a squirrel, snd awsy he went scampering up one of the tall fir trees to its most topmost branches, and would neither return to solid ground for pleadings and threats. As usual Anderson was near at hand snd vol- unteered to go up and bring him back. The poor unfortunates who were in the yard at the time were greatly pleased, and lsughed and shouted joyfally as Anderson olimbed from branch to branch toward the top. He had climbed about thirty feet from the ground when & limb broke and down came Anderson bouncing among the branches, finallly sittlag down upon the greund like the ham« mer of a pile driver. The wardens expooted to see him killed or knooked sonseless, but they were doomed to astonishment, as Anderson sprang to his feot and burst outin a volley of profenity that would have put a trooper to biush.
