It is evident, however, that the acreage is very large and that the crophas received morsor | less attention in almost every county in the states norih of those that bor- der on the gulf of Mexieo. In many | portions of the western states almost ery farmer has made the attempt to sugar and syrup for supplying the market. In & of them the best appsratus hss been employed for cmhlnstho cane and reducing the I n others very crude proesses \ve been used. | The report is general that the #on has been very unfavorable for the crop. The growth of the cane wi not large, and the proportion of charine matter in the joice was small- erthan usual. The results in the production of eans and the manufac- ture of sugar and syrup do not sp- pear to be as favorablo as they were last season. Considerable eaus in | many sections was damaged by early frost. The sudden appearance of ver cold weather put a stop to manuf turing operatione long befors all the cane was worked up. The high price of other farm products has served to convince many farmers that there was no economy in producing amber eane, ‘and that it was cheaper $o ralse corn, wheat, beef, and pork, and to buy syrap and sugar, Other inflcences have operated m: favorably to the amber cane interest. A large smount of poor machinery hesbeen sold for crushing the cane, and generally it has been sold at & very high price. Many farmers have been induced to buy erushers and . | evaporators on the representation of manufacturers or their agents that | the profit in making sugar and syrap is very large. Some sttempted to manufacture these articles witheut any experienoe in the bu-iness, and with no other knowledge of the mat ter than they derived from pamph- lots or circulars. They did not sucoeed as they expeeted, end becsme uraged. In spite of all the discoursgements, however, great progress has boen ‘made in the production of sugar and syrup from home grown eans during the past thres years. Economy) in_feeding, writes el Curtls, in The Rural New Yorker, is there is to be auy proit in g of pork. More flesh and are comparatively useloss whe state, but when cooked are food and decidedly fatbeningin ehar- acter' The most remarkable of _this clasa of food are potatoss, whish re- auirs to be cooked in order tobe di- gestible. When eooked the stareh in them—the fattening portien—Is zead- ily assimilated in the stomaeh, but when fed raw, it is otherwise. Raw otatoes are therefors among the P pooreat kinds of food for swine; but | T® when cooked they ar best. The nutritive val i also nearly doubled by being thor- oughly cooked. When fed raw & con- siderable portion passes through the stomach, especially if 1t is dry and hard, without the lesst ehemical change, and quite a peresntage is not digested. When corn Is very eheap and fuel and labor dear, it will pay best to feed raw, but where the rela- tion is otherwise and corn is high price and fuel and Iaber eheap, it w always pay best to cook {t. Wheth this important artiole of food should be fed raw or eooked depends, the tore, upon cirenmstances whish must govarn every farmer, rathes $han wpoa any arbitrary rules. Next to eooking, grinding is the most important condition in the pre- paration ot grain of any kind. All ground food s better fitted for diges- tion in the stomach and sssimilation, especially if it 18 fed whole. No animal when hungry will feed slowly enough to_pronerly mastioate grain, but it will ratber hasten to Il the stomach as rapidly as possible. Sueh amass of unmastieated food will nct be fully digested and, of coarse, will be voided without the animal seselv- ing the full bewefit from it. It serves to stop hunger, but it does not make 1ts proper quota of fat. Half the quantity put in a eondition to be fully digested, would add more to the growth of the body than the whole As pige are wsually fed, it ot down as an assured faot that there is a loss of fully one-half of the food noless we give ths oredit to the manure, which is an exponsive way of adding value toit. However cheap corn may be, this s not a profitable way of feeding, for in such localities manure had a proportions Iy emall valae as it is not needed. The wiiler's toil—ono-tenth for srinding— must be taken into aecount and the expeuse of taking to and from the mill, in convidering the cost, so that tho value of grouud feed is a relative one, and must also be determined by the circomstan Soaking the grain to a condition of <of ness 80 a8 t0 make it more readily digestible, will save the miller's toll and make it more profitable in some easer than to have it ground. When n is thus prepared pigs will 2, wellon it. In cool weather it may be eonked for forty eight hours, and ehould be fully tyis fongth of time to [Pt 1t in the best possible condition | for feeding. The preparation of food_therefore, requirea caraful attention that it may bo properly and profitably atiliesd Most vegetables may be rendersd more valuable by eonking, and when this is done they should be mixed with bran or moal to absorb the juises, otherwize there will be too tuah liquid, skd this kind of food will be | 2 found' to be washyand weakening. Too much water in the food of pigs acta a8 a diuretie, snd is too stimulating for the kidneys and urinary organs. The bran or meal should be mixed with vegetablss, and eooked with them to absorb the natural excess of the water. When thisis done there will not bs h & volume of liquid taken ioto the stomack, but the food will be mo: consentrated and healshful. Vegotables — beets, mangels or pumpkins—may be fed raw in eonnes- tion with grain, and they will be fownd to aid in digestion and at the same time they will keep animals in & heal- thyeondition. When fed in this man- ner they tend to increase the appatite and to prevent fever, which Is the natural resalt of feeding grain alome. They are eooling and laxative in thei natare, and therefore serve as amti- dotes to the heating and cosbive ef- tocts of grain. Sloppy food of all kinds makes soft and fabby meat, while dry nds to make ft firm and solid. A judiclous mingling the two kinds of feed alwags botter meat by making it firm eneugh and at the same time keeping it free from any foverish tendensies. Such meat will also possoss a good flavor, because the eonditions uader whioh it is made are healthfal. When pigs ore fed sorn on the ear they do not eat it 80 ravenously as if shelled for them, and they mastieate 1t better. 1More hogs are fattened in this manmer than in any other; bat we belleve that it would be mere & Co.
