THE DAILY BEE: DECEMBER 6, 1880. STEWARTS' CATBEDRAL. A Beautiful Church and Fami- ly’Mausoleum Nearly Completed. Description of the Great Organ Brooklyn Eagle. I'be Cathedral of the Incarnation at Garden City, the magnificent char- ity «f Mrs. A. T. Stewart, io which is the family mausoleum, is tc have the greateet musical instrument in the world. Ordinarily, it is spoken of as an organ, but in reslity is a com- bination of instruments, and the work of plecing them in position inthe ci- thedrel is far advanced. Critics who have been permitted to examme it proncunca it incomparably the most interesting in mechanical constraction and musical power. The builder, Mr. Hiborne L Roosevelt, has been af- forded every opportunity for perfect- ing his plans and ideas by Mrs. Siewart anl Judge Hilton, who give great attention to every detail of the work. Seversl ingenious devices app-ar in the de tais of the insirument. Themaccals arranged to give the anist ility for controlling the in- recessarily confus. draw stops are at an | degreee: 8o they arve ull | wiihin e ch. The knobs are of | soltd ivory, with the names engraved } | inlrss leters To readily distis. | gual the gooups of stops belonging ¢ the seversi manuals and their subdivi #i ns, different kinds of wood are vsed | for the bicksround, throush which | esch set of kanobs passes. An 1vory plate, with the name of the manusl, in placed aleo in the centre of each group. The pueumatic lever is ap- plied to the great organ and its couples. A special kind of wind chests are used, which provide each pipe with its own valve. These valves, being connected by tubmlar action, are not deranged by atmos- pheric changes, and greatly assist the musical effect, as the supply | of wind is always equal and the touch light. The draw-stop ac- tion is tubular, except in the more remote parts of the mstraments, in wlhich case it is electrical. The reede and mixtares of the great orgsn in the charcl are placed in the swell box, maki very full crescendo | effecct. When the fact is agdded to this that tue whole orgaa in the tower is, as it were, in a lo=ye swell box, and that the echoand also a portion of the orzan in the chspel have swells, an 22, fuay be fovmed of the beautiful cresc=ndo and diminuendo encct ¢hat can be produced. There are two balanced swell pedals arranged in close proximity; one controls the chancel and echo, and the other the tower and chapel swells. The organ- ist can operate both at once, or grad ually open one while he closes the other, which would give the effect of the sound gradually ceasing at one end of the cathedral and incre:sing at the other. The bellows are operated by hydraulic engines, there being three in the chapel. One of these op- erates THE MAGNET) MACHINE whioh generates the electricity, in- atead of using a battery. Two engines are in the tower, one operating the heavy pressure bellows which supplies wind to the solo organ and the chime action. The chapel organ also has an engine. All of these are controllea by the orgapist from the chancel. The remoter portions of the orzan are connected with the chancel by cables of electric wire, over twenty miles of it being ued for this purpose. The chimes can, be played from the solo manuel, and also from a separate key- board, which is in another part of the cathedral The combiration pedals ave arranged so that the orzanist can change auy combiunation to suit him- self, small knobs heing placed above the drawstops for this purpese. In the musical portions of the instra- ment, all the best qualities ot the English, French and German schools are represented, experience having ghown that a perfect insirument can ouly be produced by utilizing all the desirable inventions that have been made by other builders. The scheme of the organ is as follows: Compas of manuals, © O to C, 4,161 keys; com- pas of padals, C C C to F, 30 keya. Great organ, 31 stops, 2,206 pipes wind pressuce, 3% inches. Swell or- gan, 27 stops, 1,942 pipes, wind pres- eure, 3 inches. Choir organ, 23 stops, 1,456 pipes, 2} inches wind preseure, S.lo and echo manuel, 14 stops, 776 pipes. The pedal organ has 20 stops and 651 pipes The organ is the largest in the world, the total number of speaking stops beingz 115, and the number of pipes SEVEN THOUSAND AND THIRTY ONE. The organ in the Royal Alkert Hali, Loudon, has but one hundred and eleven stops, the Cincinnati organ ninety-six, and the Boston Music Hall organ eighiy-four. The Garden City cathedral organ has four manuel keyhoards aud one padal keyboard, and though it is all played from one keybox eituated at cme side of the choir, it is distriboted 1n four parts of the cathedral. The largest part 1s in an octagonal chamber built at one side of the chancel for this purpose. The next largest portion is in a room in the tower st the opposite end of the church, immediately below the chimes, are separated from the church by » stained glass window, which is opened and shut from one of the swell pedals in the chancel by means of electricity, A third partis the chap- ¢, under the body of the church, and can be played there from its own key- bo.rds for chapel services. A fourth part is above the ceiling, called the echo, and is played from the solo keys. There is & part of the pedal organ in esch of tha above places, The whole orgau, however, is governed from the chancel keybox. The pressure of the solo ozgan (which isin the lower room, avd operate the chimes) is ten inches on the water gauge, and on the rest of the organ is two and a half and three and three and a half inches. It should beadded to the above that the manuals are arranged with over- | stops is as close together as four manuals were ever brought. The drawstops reach but nineteen inches above the keyboard, and the organist can reach the most remote on each side with ease. The small combination kaobs above the drawstops enable the orgsn- st in a moment to SET ANY COMBINATION on any pedal, from full organ to one s'op. Through this mediam the facil- { ties for instantaneous change of regis- tration are made almost infinite. The Roosevelt sound-boards are used. They are not elide chests, but each etop is drawn on by admittine the wind pressure to that division of the sound-board immediately under the pipes of that stop. The pallet admit- ting the wind from here to the pipe is opened by the collapsing of its little exhaust bellows opj.osite it. Grcoves ruu across the sourd board in the bot- t)m boards, one tor each note, and connecting with the little bellows, The key pallets are at the ends of these grooves, and release or admit the pressure to the little bellows, accord- g as they are opened or shut. This avoids ail the suction iucarred by the use of large pallets on slide chests, and th- many annoying effocts of the ehanges of temperature on ordinary act The electric, tubuolar or tracker action can be applied equally | well to these small key pallats, ren- | dering it practicable to place the chests angwhere, with relation to the keys. The drawstop action is also impler and easior to work, requiring 0.ly a tracker, or, where it 1s tubalar, a lead pipe, and electric, two wires. Al the pedal key action and draw- that’ are not electric are tubular, maki no tracker ac- tion in the organ excapt for the chan- cel great, swell aud choir sounding boards. All the coupler knobs relat- ing to the geeat organ are placed im- mediately under its keys, and the same for the swelland solo. The chor- ophone, pedal contra bombard and serpent are three reeds of the most superb voicing. The solo “‘ruba mir- abilis” is a French reed of great power, while the baritone, though powerful, 1s gmooth-Zoned, and made entirely of wood, except the tongues. The whole scheme is compiled with ine grevtest study and precaution, varticularly the mixtures. In the voiciug, the first object has not been to obtain power, but sweetness, varie- 1y, character, to each stop, and a per- feot blending of the whole, so that neither solemnity nor brilliancy will be lost, and: yet neither one will pre- dominate. Every effort is being made to have the instrument as perfect as human skill can make it. The cost of it will exceed £50,000. THE CATHEDRAL itself is well advanged, and if desired that swelled head o’ yourn. up, the rest o’ youn bums.” Nobody stirred, but all looked at the dyapeptic, who quietly said will not driok with you.” “No? It'd b cheaper for yeh to crawl into.a prospect hole and pull a tombstone over yer head. 1 kio k ck this whole town from hell to breakfast and I believe I'll start in on this deadfall. Trot out yer cohorts and fetch on the mob. I'man Angel from Par- adise, and a holy terror when I flop my wings. Chronicle. *‘I'm a roarin’ ripsnorter from a hoorah camp, and I can't be stepped on,” remarked a thick-set, white-eyed man, with a lower jaw like the cow- catcher of a locomotive, as he swag- gered into a C street saloon and thumped the bar with bis fist until the glasses jingled. : The barkeeper caught a whisky bot- tle that was just tambling eff the bar and told the stranger that he needn’t make 80 much noise about it, as no- body wanted to step on him. “You bet they don’t, young feller. I'm au angel from Paradise valley, and a bad one, too; and when I flop my wings there’s a tornado loose. Give me some o’ your meanest whisky, and a whole lot of it—somethin’ that tastes like bumble-bee stings pickled in vitriol While the barkeeper was hunting around for some fusel oil and rubbing a gles with a red pepper, a group around the stove surveyed the strange gentleman curiously. A thin gentle~ man, with a bulging forehead and ‘a dyspeptic look, said to the others: “‘Now, there’s an illustration of what I was siying. A bully is always a coward. That fellow would have no moral courage whatever were he put | to the test. If he were chailenged to fight without cause he could not at- tain the sublime height of moral he roism to refuse. He would be afraid of being called acoward. But, mind you, he wonld never brag and bully unless he thought he had the advan- tage. You see he is a stout man, and presumes upon his physical superiority to most men to bully and blackguard them. Now, Bill here is stronger than that blowhard, but you never see him ina fight. He's quiet; but get him started and he would bea lion aroused. He's got moral cour- aze.” *‘The *‘Bill” referred to was & tall, powerfally built man, with steel-gray eyes and firmly set mouth. He said nothing in reply to the compliment pud him, but quietly watched the Angel from Paradise. The latter {drank his whisky and smashed the glass on the bar, “What in de yer mean by giving a gentleman such stuff as thai! Did T ask yeh for rinsins yeh chicken-livered whelp! I've got a graveyardfull of roosters that played that racket on me. I've got a good mind to fan the air with yer corpse.” “Now, get out of this,” said the | ! barkeeper, becoming angry- *‘Get outo’ nothin’, Gimme adrink, and all you starved bums around the stove, come up here and have 8 drink with a thoroughbred high-stepper for once, just to say ye've drank 10 decent company. It'll be an honer to tell yer children about it some day, if such an oraery lot o’ cusses own any child- ren.
