A NEW FIELD OF ADVENTURE, AND PROF- ITIN THE ARCTIC. Ssn Francisco Chroa'cls, The little schooner San Diego, Capt. Catheart, arrived in port on Tuesdsy, sfter & five months’ crui-e in pursuit of welrus among the fslands of Bohring's Sea. Tho iVory aud oil of these huge byperbereaus are utilized for various manufacturing as been supp'ied by whalers, who, when whales wero scarce, eked oat a cargo with a product cf walus. To the ueual articles of ivory and cil, the BSan Diego has add~d the hides of these immense animals. If they can be cxtensively used, wal- rus bunting must speedily become & successful enterprise. The San Diego, beiag only thirty-two tons burden, is much too small a vessel for other than private adventure. Her crew, com- posed of hardy resolute men, have, however, returned from their cruise with a remuncrative cargo, and a number of white and clonamon bear skins attest that thelr labors have jnot been without accident. In a conversation with James Morrison, the intelligent uiate, he inforited a Chronicle ¥eporter that walrus abonnd 10 immenss numbers among the islands of the Behring's sea Like-the seal, the elamber up the rocksand beachcs, and, hudaling closely, sleep for days without movemet. In this condition they van be readily approached, and by "ekillful marksmen shot at will. The crew of the San Diego shot 700 in one shoal onthe beach at Hall Island, before the myriads cComposing it took to the Watet for safety. Many of them weighed over 3,000 pounds. Owiog to a violent storm but200 of this number were Secured, Near Cape Upright and the south of Bt. Mathew's Teland, eighty-one were shot, and_anqther storm ccclr- ring, during which both anchors wero lost, obliged the return of the vessel before the cruise was hali completed. Heretofore the method of capturing walrus has been with the harpoon. The alarm with which this method casioned soon rendered 1t iinpractic ble. The plan adopted by the crew of the Ban Diego was for each man, armed with & Witcdester or Sharps’ rifle, {0 approach the sleeping animals cautiously and shoot st the particular portion of theskall covering the brain. Any failure to penetrate the brain does not kill. The front of the head 1s impervious to a bullet, and the neck is 80 well protected by the blubber that a bull produces noother effect than to alarm and excite the animal, and thus cause the entire shoal ~ to take to the water. Every shot must kill instantly, without producing any commotion, or the game disappears. The walrus is very stupid unlees disturbed, when it fights with great power. Throwing its immense head back so as to ele- vate the tusks to a horizontal position itsprings forward, and by a rapid move cf the head is enabled to strike with unerring aim any object within thres or four feet. Woe to_the man or animal within that limit, He is transfized in & moment. Fightsamong the males are frequent and terrific, oiten termiating in the death of one or both. Few females are found in Behring's Sea during the summer mozins, the theory among hunters being that they pass this season with their young in the Arctic and appear below the straits late in_the fall and winter. Unlike the seal, they have a habit of eloepiog in the water, with Eurpolal, but the market heretofore | taining the rest of tne wonderful unperaileled collection of living reptles, by George, I would be asham-d to ba » sneke. The ivory of the walrus sells readily for 45 or B0 cefits per Billiard balls, cane heads ivory articles of similar size are made of it here, but the larger part of it is sent to China and used extensively in the manufacture of Chiuese ornaments. The oil is equal in quality to whale oil, commands the same price, and is used for the same purposes. The hides are from cne and a balf to two inches in thickness. Waen tanned they furnish a saperior article of beltivg for heavy machinery and are unsurpassed for polishing si ver plate. White bears are numerous in Behring's Ses, and the crew of the San Diego obtained the skins of seven or eight that they shot on the islands. They aleo killed a large number of cinnamon ‘ear in Alaska. On one occasion, while slaughtering the wal- rus_on Hall's island, a bunter, whils in the act of reloading his gun, startled by @ rustle on the beach, and to his great dismay beheld ar - enormous white bear seated within twenty feet of the spot he occupied. Dropping his | gun, he started ona run, and was fcllowed hotly.by. the bear, who gained on him at every leap. A comrade percaiving his d: ger, directed his aim at the ferocious beast, and was fortunate enough to kill him, but not until he was within lnpin§ distance of his intented prey. The climate of Behring’s sea is cold and fogey, and daylight during the montha of June and July is of about 8 hours' duration. Very little ice is to be seen there in the summer; t] ands sre barren, and the whole n unpromising for any other than fishing and maritime purposes. Owing to the shallowness of the water, storms there, which are frequent, make a Tary turbulent and dangerous naviga- on. True Stories About Animels. Burlington Hawkeye. The big tent was thrown into great excitement cne evening, just about the close of the season. ~ The largest rattlesnake had escaped from its glass cage and wandered off into the coun- try. The local papers were all filled with accounts of its monstrous size and its dreadful rapacity and appalling ferocity. People were afrald to go to bed at night or to get up in the mora- ing, the papers said, and the elephaot wonderod why they didn’t go to bed in the morning then, and get up at uight. Reports came in first that the terrik,le reptile had swallowed a lamb, then it was a sheep, then & Now- fouradland dog, then it was a yearling calf, the next report sud it was a horse, and finally word came that the ionster had swallowed a yoke of oxen and finally laid siege to a church, in which the terrified congregation, afraid to lsave the house, had barred the doors and fastened the shutters and were waiting for rescue or starva- tion. At last, the second day after the escape, an cld farmer came to town, bringing part of the carcass of the smake with him. Jt appeared then, that the snake had wriggled out to his farm, three miles from town, and had got into the ben house and sucked threa egge™ Then it made for the milk house and drank two quarts of milk. Then it wriggled down through the orchard, where it met a little sandy pig, the runt of his litter, about two years cld. It made one lick at the pig, which bristled up and went for the terrar of the menag- erie, chased it back through tha orchard, around themilk house, across the deor yard, and finally cornered it in thehen house, where, after a terrific combat, in which two old hens were driven of their nest aud nearly thres dozen eggs trampled into omelet, the little sandy pig soake and ate most of it up before the farmer appeared on the scene and res- cued what was left of ths monster from the jaws of the pig. The animals had listened attentive- Iy while the farmer was telling the wadsger about. the affair, and after the afternoon performance they were wondering and talking about it. “Well, by Geargs,” the And the hyena led off the applause of mertiment in a hideotis shriek 6f laughter. : ““And ycu know;” said the monkey, “how t0 men at Tonawanka, down in York state, knocked the spots off the leopard with base ball clubs when he got out.” “T remember,” said the Jecpard; “‘when you got loose at London, Olilo, ana climbed up a lightning rod and got stuck fast on a tar roof, and had to be pulled off and have your feet soaked in oil and couldn’t climb even a ladder for noarly thiee weeks.” ““And I remember,” squawked the toucan to the monkey, ‘‘when I pecked a hole in your back you could lay your fist in.” ‘Do you remember,” squeaked the Guinea pig, ‘‘when the mule killed the lioness at the Cincinnati zoo?” “Yes,” sald the elephant, ‘“but none of these things are s bad as the disgraceful fate f this much adver- tised rattlesnake nine feet long with thirty-eight rattles on a sideand a mouth full of enough venom to de- populate o whole camp meeting. Killed by s pig, a ssndy pig at that. Let these lessons teach ns all that we are now where nature evidently intended we shoold be. Once at liberty in the woods, and the fields, we are clubbed by base fellows, prodded by old women, beat en by men, kicked to death by mulee, or eaten by pigs. Happyis the lot of tho animal who has no ambition to roam but is content to remain where fate has wisely decreed that e is best off. In every instance, when we have escaped from our so-cailed bondage, man or brates more ignoble than our- solves have overcome me, beaten, kill- ed and esten us, we have lost our rep- utation for courage and ferocity, and have proved the bill stand a Jiar.
