Yet few recognizs in the elegant, ¥sy- sing man who now commands the | deep respect of his fellow-citizens the once cool-headed, imperturbable gam- bler who it his day figured prominent- Iy along the Pacific coast aud who was almost universally recognized as the shrewdest faro dealer in the west “‘As for the game's mortality, that's neither here nor there, When dealt upon the square it is much like any other game. It is not to be thought that the law will hinder men a bit if { they want to play, and often_they aro forever carcd of playing when they find it doesn't pay. L've dealt the game for twenty years, but I've quit now. T made nothing nor lost soy- thing, and but for a sight I once saw I should probably be & gambler stlll, Hereby hangs a tale. Lot me tell it: “Some three yesrs agoIran a high- toned game at a cortain place you probably know, for it strikes me I saw you there. It was a square game, as 1 will leave any one to say—a thriv- ing game—for 1 dealt for half the blood in town. and often had ss many as five layouts at a timo, with too much business on hand to even get time o rest. One evening & young chap strolled in, with a sort of curi- ous stare on his face, and I concluded right there that he was green. He was fair-headed, and had a pair of blue eyes and clear-cat features—an innocent-looking young fellow; if ever 1saw one. It only required glancs £ convihoo you that ho wass stranger in the gambling room. Ho on was at hoitte, thotgh, for Tsaw in his blue eyes the love of play, and after that evening he was a constant visitor. He played his pile right up and never growled if his luck was hard, and on every second card he'd stack the limits up in blue. ~Take it altogether his luck was hard—some- times the hardest T ever saw. I've known him to lose on & single deal seven double shots. “Business for me of course, but somehow it almost seemed too bad. 1 couldn’t say a word, thogh, and yet I liked the boy. He had lots of the flithy. I thick from the way he began he must have dropped & cool £100,000 on the game, and he never growled, ““We both quit gambling the eame night—he, poor lad, for suflicient rea- Tiberal corn feeding. We must adjust | our feeding to suit the markets that consume_our pork. Boston wants smaller, leaner pork than the south, and that Yankee city buught of the west last year 2,281,552 hogs. Here is a growing market for light hoge, and if at the new departure men would begin to make up a new breed of hogs, we have only to change our mathod of feeding less corn and more grass, and shippingat an earlier age, to meet thodemand. Thercis but one msn in thoworld whoclaimshe hasestablish- od a breed of animals in so short & time s three years, and he did not know he had accomplished 5o wonder- ful o foat until his enterprising son- in-law put him in print. Scientific men have not yet placed his clatm on rocord as an example showing how 5000 8 new breed of domestic animals may be produced by a skillful breeder. That there is s demand for larger per cent of lean meat io hogs fed ex- clusively on corn is evidenz. The habit of laying on fat has become so well_established among swine bred and fed in the corn growing states, that it will require skillful feeding to correct or modify the habit or tenden- cy. This can be dons by a change of food and by a judicions selec- tion fof the best breeders from the herd. In districts where pess and oats are produced as cheaply as corn the breeders have favorable conditions for the experiment, In stead of feeding corn alune, at an carly age, lot oats and peas b fed. As s00n as pigs can do well on prass let only grass and oats be fed. It will be soen tho fizst season that the pigs have o larger per cent of muscl or lesn meat than of fat. A fow weeks feed- ing of corn to pigs thus raised will produce an atticle of pork that will suit the Eastérnand English buyets better than hogs fed wholly on_corn. Shall it be the Eastern or Western farmers who will first adjust their tiothods of febditig to the demands of traile, A Fashionable Woman's Prayer. Enablo the poor to shift for them- sclves, and save me from all mission- ary beggars. sons, and I becanse I loathed the game. Tt was in this wise: “His coin gave out in a deal ortwo, and he put ap a dismond ring, just to soe his ill luck out, you know. The chips soon went. He had a pin, a flaming stone in massive metal. Ho passed_that in without a wora, and drew 50 in gold. So help me God! T wished him luck as heartily as any player there; but no, his, lest stake went my way In a losing ace. We drew $300 more, 1 think, on his watch and chain, and tried his lino bets again, but his luck was gone. My God? T'll never forget the pale, haggard look that crossed hls fzce, but ho was game. He never ut- tered a word, and kept his chair like a. pillar of etone. For a moment he seemed dazed at his revetses, but sad- denly his eyo cadght the thin, worn circlet of dull gold on his little finger. He locked at it a liitle while and a dark-wave of hot erimson blood passed over his face, for the tirclet sebmed to cling even fastor than the flashing. gew he had passed In before. He at last stripped it off his finger and hand- od it to me. It came reluctantly, this worn old ring. ‘What can L have on thist’ he asked. ‘I don’t know what its value is, but T'll redeem it first of all’ It might have cost $5 new, but it was worthless then. “S(ill 1 passed out » fifty stack in return, just to let him try again. He planked it down in the pot, and then low upon the table he laid his face in bis folded arms. _\Well, for & wonder, his luck chauged and he won three times. He took no notice of me as I told him the limit barred, and 8o we played two fity on each card. Would you belleve it/ In the deal the pot won out and never lost! And till he lay with his face hid in his arms. The deal was out, and I shook him up, but not a muscle moved, and, raising his faco, I started back In horror at the glassy expression of his eyes, for the boy was dead. “I'vo often wondered to myself since that night what thoughts went flitting through his brain as he bowed his head and hid his face from our bt; what pledges of a bitter life, re- ets for & fortune he had thrown away with lavish hand, and loathing for Lis irrevocable conrse. Who cin telll We can_but guess at them, but may nover feel. His facoshowed years of hell endured in that brief game, but it was not until the coroner’s jury sat that I learned all. Before them was developed the fact that the ring' which had changed his luck as it did his existence was given him by his dear, dead mother years before. Poor boy! Inever dealc agrin.” A Lean Breed of Hogs Demended. SL. Louts Post-Dispatch, Some of our eastern exchanges are talking about a new departure in swine husbandry. They want a breed that will give less fat and more loan meat. Well, now, our eastern brethren need not_be at the trouble and ex- pense and delay of originating a new breed of swine to meet this demand. Tt will take yeats to change any of our well-established breeds back to tho old woods hogs. The short cut for these lean ma2p Is to send sn order to the mountain regions f Kentucky or Teunesseo, where the swine make their own living. The per cent of lean is vastly in excess of the fat in these mast and oraes-fod pigs. They are travelers, t00. Itis not lmprobable that they could travel from Kentucky to Albany in thirty days, and lose no fat. On their arrival they wouldbelean enough tosuit the most inveterate fat hater, +pd the musclo would be well devel- oped. We saw a few droves of those quick stepping, up-headed pigs com- into Cincinoat! last season, and stranga 10 ¢ay, they brought a higher price than some of the smoothest, fattest pigs from Obio and Indiana. The lat- ter had broad backs, deep hams, small heads and short legs—in fact there was a low per cent of offal. The Ken- tucky pigs had long heads, long necks, long legs, light hams and thin shallow sides, and the per ocont of offal was lmmerse. Yet they made fancy little hams and thin bacon. The demand for lard has declined with the increased production of coal cil. The latter has in a measure superseded lard oil. Tn other words, petroloum products have supersedod ard and its products. The thing for farmersin Ohio and Indiana, Tllinois and Towa to do, in view of the new conditions of the pork market, is to put their hogs on the matket before they are as fat as they can be made. The greatest firofit in swine feeding is in the first 250 or 300 popnds. The first 200 pounds can be made for three cents a pounds with more clear profit to the farmers than the second 200 pounds. It is more_profitable to sell seven monthe pigs weighing 200 pounds than fifteen months pigs that will weigh €00. It requires mors corn to make a pound of pork after hogs have been fed five weeks than when fed ome or two weeks. Grass fed hogs ean be made profitably fat In four weeks of Shed the light of thy countenafice on my camel's-hair shawl, my laven- der silk, my point laco and my neck- lace of diamonds, and keep_the moth out of my sables, T beseech thee, oh fortune!
