They had trav- cled side by side till they passed Croft's station when a freight train ceame alongside and rattled by them in the opposite direction. The first crashing sound of the freight remind- ed the Ohioan of death and disaster, 1o doubt, for he turned his head with a jerk toward the window. Then ob- serving that there was more scarc than denger he sat down somewbat embarrassed. But the sudden move- ment had been too much for the p per collar. It was_all broken up. a8 a good-souled old gentleman, and she laid sside her retiring dispoition when she observed his embarrassment in the disjointing of the collar. She rose very politely and enid: a mind to,” said he, looking her squarely in the face, and becoming reassured to such an extent that he soon acted perfoctly at home. Pro- gress was then the watchword between reached Batavia cne would have mis- taken them for an old widower and his gushing young bride, so thorough- ly did they improve the time chatting chief and yawned behizd it. Then sho began to wink very slowly, as if by effort, and finally began to nod. Feeling quite as much acquainted as if it had been his own nicce that sat monnaie again! I might have known that you were one of those rharp young railroad swindlers disguised. They always put on a paper_collar, poor clothes and wig, to deceive peo- ple and steal their purse: A Misanderstanding by Rail. mocrat, Last night, If the story of a Roch- ester pastenger who came down from Bffalo may be believed, thers was a amusing and somewhat exciting inci- dent on the train, An Ohio farmer, from the vicinity of Cleveland, had been riding in the first coach back of the smoker all the way from the last named. He wore homespun blue pantsand a coat which he had evi- dently purchased ready made. On s head was a broad-brim black hat, 1d arcund his neck there was the un- mistakable piper collar, permeated with perapiration. At Boffilo a young lady in a brown traveling dress, with a0 ‘apparent abundance of the new- fangled, spread-eagle crinoline be- neath it, got aboard the same car and commenc-d casting about for a eeat. With that chracteristic selfish- ne which marks the American traveler of to-day, noarly every man in the car who had not a lady or another man in the seat with him, had placed a litile satchel on one side of the seat and himself on the other, to carry the idea that the whole seat was “iaken.” Tho damsel wiggled through the car and then started dis- contolately to walk back. She hadn’t reached the middle of the car when our Ohio friend hitched his shoulders with marked individuality, twisted his shaggy head around on a large, thick, sun-burned neck, to see if anybody else was in tho sarae predicament, lifted his carpet-bag from the outside ““T reckon I kin make room fur you She did want one, and she wasn’t His fair companion had epotted him “Qan’t T pin It for you, sir? “H'm! T recken you kin, ef you're the two, and before the two had —he about ‘‘the gals at home” and she about everything. The conductor had been through and taken up the tickets this side of Batevia, and the demasel's talk, liko o toy wa'ch which is wound every hour, had about run down. Finally, she took out her embroidered handker- beside him, the old gentleman put forth his hand to “budgs” the sleepy girl and remind her that it a few miles further.” Fatal move. ment for hin He touched her in sbout the locality of a pocket in her coat. Springing to her feet like a young tigress arcused, she exclaimed i tenes approaching a scream, which few of the sleepy paesangers failed to hear: “Don’t you dare to touch my port— All this was said about s rapidly as the words could be put together. But the astonished reply came as quickly as it cculd follow: “Thunder and lightnin’! Who are you a-talkin’ to, misst But you can’t blackmail me-—you can't; I'll expose you! Durn me, of T wasn't all took inl Now get your seat whar you kin!” And he planted the carpet-bag back on the seat. Chair Scarfs. Among the new *‘parlor draperies” and classed with them by dealers in objects for household ornament in its elegant branches, are what are called “chair scarfs,” and these supersedo the now abandoned tidy, Many of the materials used, however, for the obeolete tidy come into use for the chair scarf, and the softeat reps, mo- mie cloth, etc., are used. The strip must be a yard and a quarter in lengih and at least two-thirds of a yard in width. ~ The ends are heavily fringed. Upon the center is em- breidered a group of ferns, a couple of brilliant birds, a bird’s nest with bat- terflies floating aboveit, a rich cluster of grapes with leaves and tendrils, or, if preferred, a *‘gonfalon” design in old times colors and outlined with gold “‘rough.” The narrow border is also embrowdered and outlined in ara- basque. A heavy top is formed by doubling the material over, the depth of a couple of inches, and the scarf s then laid over the back of the chair, with the zolors of which it must either harmonize or skilltully contrast. Several different chair scarfs are to be found in many parlors, but it will be found with people of taste_ that all barmonize in design and color both with each other and with the ensemble of drapery iu the apartment. Advantages of Live Stock. Prairic Farmer Too many farmers on fair sized farms do not pay enough attention to live stook. Too many farmers con- tinue to grow grain and grass for sale, year atter year, without returning anything to the soil in the form of plant food. T think this is a very injurious course in farming, and those who practice it will find, sooner or later, that they can’t make it pay. One of the best modes of manuring land is to pasture it. On many farms there is considerable waste land that cannot be_cultivated profitably, but can be used to good advantage for pas- ture. Ttis essior and less expensive to feed the grain and hay on the farm and then ship it off in the form of meat than it is to ship the bulky grain and we have the manure left on the farm. Ina ccmmunity where stock is raised and fed you will find a high- er plane of intelligence among the people. The farms will ba better im- proved and be worth more than in & country where no attention is given to stock. With good care any ordinary far- mer can raise stock at a fair profit, all animals should be well cared for and kept in a thriving condition till they are ready for market. There s great loss in getting animals fat in the fall and then starving them through the winter, for it will take them half the summer to gain what they have last. 1 was impressed with tho sound sense of an article the other day on winter- ing calves. In closing the writer says: “Talways aim to have them plump and fat when I turn them on to grass, and then itis just fun to ses them kick up their heels and grow fat.” —_— ~ Panama Hats. Not all, however, known to commerce by that name are plaited in the isthmus; by fara_greater pro. portion being made in Manta, Monte Ohristi and other parts of Ecuador. The hats are worn in almost the whole American coutinont and the West Indies, and probably would be equally used in Europe did not their high price (varying from $2 to 8150) prevent their importation. They are istinguished from all others by con- ing only of a singls_piece, aud by their lightness and flaxibilit hey may be rolled up and put into the pocket without injury. In the rainy season they are 8pt to get black, but by wsshing with soap and water, besmearing them with Time juice, or any other acid, and ex- posing them to the suu, their white- s easily restored. So littlo is known about these hats that it may not be out of place to give an account of their manufacture. The “‘straw” (prja), previous to plaiting, has to undergo several processes. Theleaves are gathered befors they unfold, all their ribs and coarser veins removed, and the rest, without being separated from the base of the leaves, is re- duced to shreds. After being exposed to the sun a day, and tied Into a knot, the straw is immersed in boiling wa® ter until it becomes white. 1t is then hung up in a shady place, and subse- quently bleached for two or three days. The straw is now ready for use, and in this stato sent to different places, especially Peru, where Indiats manufacture from it those beautful cigac cases which soTFeAE i high as 830 each.
