Brivcerort, August 1.—With the exception of an irregular-shaped dark spot_on each cheek, Mrs. Samuel J. P. Miles, of this clty, would easily pass for a Caucasian. And yet she was born & mulatto, as scores of peo- who have known her all her life are ready to certify. Each of the spots is about the size of a silver dollar, and about the color of a dark copper cent. The rest of her face is a positive white, of & somonbat leaden hue, whila her hands and arms are unnaturally white, showing mot the slightest trace of either a dark or a ruddy tint. The case has excited much interest among Mras. Miles’ acquaintances, especially on the part of the colored people who know her, and among the doctors. They have seen her grad- ually growing whiter from year to year, until it scemed to be merely a question of time when she would be transformed into a white woman. Some of the colored people eay that they have heard of similar cases before, and that it is an unvarying rule that when ove of their race be- comes wholly white death epeedily ensue Mrs. Miles herself is nct less die- tressed than puzzled over the myste- rious change. She has repeatedly consulted doctors since it began, to see if the process could not be check- ed, and has been heard to say that che would give £10,000, or any sum she might ever possess, if she could be restored to her natural color. Her husband a tall, full-blooded negro, is a whitewasher and preacher. They have two children, whose complexion is of a rather darker shade than that of a mulatto. Mrs. Miles herselfis a pleasant, mild-spoken woman of lady- like and intelligent appearance, and is about thirty years of age. Her hair has a slight’ kinkiness, but hardly enough to atiract attention. She is very sensitive about the coior change she has undergone, and cannot easily be induced to talk about it. It began, she says, about twelve years ago, just after she had recovered from a severe bilious attack, to which she was eub- ject, She had sufferel from these at- tacks since, but her gemeral health was good. “How did the change come out,” the visitor asked. “First,” replied Mrs. Miles, ‘there came out a white spot_on the wrist. Tt kept growing, eularging so fast that T coul . seo it spreading from day to day. Sconaspot of the same kind appeared on the other wrist, and both kept cxtending upward until they spread completely over my arms and my face, except for thess two spots that you see. The extension of the spots over these parts of my body took only about two months, but the in affected has steadily been grow- ing whiter, and the dark spots on my face smaller. I suppoee thoee now left will_entirely disappear in time.” Mrs. Miles said that excepting her arms her body below her neckretained its natural color. *‘I felt badly about the changs at first,” she went on, “not only because I was afraid that it would aff.ct my health. It hasn't seemed to do this, and the doctors told me that probably it would not. But they couldn’t seem to explain what caused the change, and did not appear to think they could cure me. They told me it was some peculiar skin disease they did not know much about, but thought likely it came from my liver.” Some physicians with whom the writer talked said practically the same thing. ‘‘The subject isn’t treat- ed of much if at all in the medical books,” he, ““and I don’t think it has ever been made matter of spec il study. About all you csn say is that the change is dua to some arrest in the color development, caused probably by the failare of the liver to perform its functions properly. Another case in the city, neatly as remarkable ar Mrs. Miles’, is that of & white lady, whose skin lately began to change to a decidedly aatk hue. She is the wife of the Rev. J. G. Davenport, cf the Park Street Congregational church, and the change for a time was an occasion for much xioty to herself and her friends. he had been in poor health for some time with a liver affections which gives support to the opinion of the doctors reaches to what would be thair knees |if they were men. Now they face | each other, each holding the two | bands of the other. Anybody who | has seen the firemen at work on a hand-engine will understand the mo- tion readily. They keep this up for five or ten minutes, talking like a brace of parrots all the time, till one of them screams with all her wight and ruos half-way to the bath house. She stops to remark that she knows she will die, and looking down sees the cause of her scare—a blade of ecl-grass_tightly wound about her ankle. Spunking up courage sgain, they seek the water once more, and again the hend-engine manoeuvre is repeated. Then one of them whispers, “Thers's a man!” And the other says, ““T don’t care one bit,” and runs with all her might to ihe bath house. Then the one who had seen the man saunters slowly siter, picking up & shell or two on the way, pretendingto think there ien't such a thing as a man in creation. By and by they omerge from the bath house, and ostentatiously display the key, towels and bathing dresees; chattiog in most volubls manner. It was just lovely!” cne remarks. And th other eays she feels “so refreshed, you know.” A Donkey's Deep Grief. Hemer Miniog Index. Newspapers have often told scories about the affection that dogs, horses and other animals have for each other, but we have never heard of a jackass being accused of any such tender sen- timents. It is now our duty to record the faithful love ong donkev had for a companion who had.shared his lot for 50 long. Last week W. D. Wasson went out to Tioga district on a pros- pecting expedition, taking gtwo jacks Throtbing Headacto. i s the be along to pack his blankets, tools and provisions. In coming down the rows with the sound of his lamenta- tions. Mr. Wasson tried to coax the grief siricken mountain barge away, but the donkey ouly lifted up his voice and wept, and would not Le com- forted. Then he essayed to drive with sticks end stones the noisy beast from the scene cof his lament. But drive he would not. The donkey re- membered how he and his beloved companion had foraged tozether from handy clothes-lines; had in friendship masticated fence-posts and sections of barb-wire, and had contentedly vib- bled such tender morsels as old gunny sacks and cast-off overalls, or had es- suaged keen hunger with old boots and oyater cans, and could not be in- duzed to leave the spot. Then the crusl master beat him terribly, still his grief nerved him to obstinacy. The master felled two or three large trees on his back, but tono purpose. Final- ly the master in despair took the pack off and left him with his dead. The Iost seen of him he was eating the cropping of a quartz ledge and weep- ing for his friend. ked the Trade, Datrcit Frao Press. A citizen of Cass avenuo, having a residenco worth about £16,000, has a sign of *‘for eale” on the house, and tho other day an old African, driving a stone blind hotse and a wagon which wobbled all over the road, drew up in front of the place just as the owner came out: “Boss, am dat place fur ealel” promptly inquired tho darkey as he dropped the reins. “Yes, sir,” was they reply. “What's your werry lowest figgers, sali?” “Sixteen thousand dollars.” *‘Dat incloodesds back yard an’all, > The old man got down, looked over the fenca and peered around, and fin- ally eat “How much would ye 'low ma on dat hoss an’ wagin if we madea trade?” “Oh, about five dollars.” The querist settled his hat with a jerk, climbed into the wagon and was driving away_without a word, when the citizen asked: ““Well, what do you think?” ““What does I huk, sah! Why, sah, 1 fiuk de trado am blocked. 1z will- in’ to knock off sumthin’, but I can't take no five dollars fur dis outfit. De hoss alone cost me six!” that these color changes proceed from somsthing abnormal in_the workings of this organ. Mrs. Davenport be- 2o to improve in health lately, and the dark epots are disappearing, as the result, probably, of medical treatment and better health. Race Between a Bzar and a Pig. Oregon Astorian. Bears must be very plentiful in the vicinity of Tlwaco. One was shot on Monday last back of the Aberdeen cannery; and Captain Gray informs us that when heand Mr. Loomis the other day emerged from the portage on the weather beach, » fine bear of about 300 pounds was chasing a good- slzed hog. They balted their team to wWitness tho race, that soon becamo 80 exciting that Loomis offered to bet tho bear would win. As the bear was Loomis’ faverite, Captain Gray had no choice but to back the pig, which he did. Their presence did not disturb the contestants in the least. Piggy very cleverly doubled on bruin, bat bear gained on him, and the porker made for therocks which put out at the foot of the portage, and here com- menced a regular dodgo game, which gave the piz a chancs to recover his wind. He could dodge and turn quicker than tbe bear, which began to ehow signs of fatigue, taking advan- tage of which the pig made a_break into the thick brush, saving his life and winning the wager for the captain. As the travelers had no arms bruin retired in safety, though Loomis wanted very much to kill him for making him lose his bet Women at the Beach. New Haven Union. Kind reader, didst ever ses two women bathe!” They emerge from their bath house looking as if they had stolen something and expected to see a burly policeman bob around the corner, clap his hands upon them, and exaltingly cry, “Now I've got you.” Then they trip along half a dozen etepr, not altogether like Dundreary or a sandpiper, but somewhat resemb- livg both. Then one says, “Ob, dear!” and reaches down fo pick a pebble out of her shoe, while the other takes the opportunity to yell like a pair of panthers, and then run back with all her might to the bath house, Her mate, of course, doesn’t get the pebble out of her shoe, but gets sev- eral more fn to keep it from getting lonesome. Then the screamer tiptces down to the place and says, “What a fool I wes!” The other comes down, having secured a new invoice of pabbles in transit, and screams, ““What isit?” As itis nothing but a devil's apron-string and not a snake, the scraamer again says, fool!” Then they laugh. But_they keep their eyes about them, and each mouth is_always ready fo emit a scream. By this time they reach the water's edge. A punny roller is ad- vancing. 1t breaks a little way out, and as the line of foam is sent up the beach they turn and scamper with all their might. Then one says, “What a fool nd the other re- plies, “Tkoow it!” Then they take hold of hands, determired to do or die.
