Mr. ¥. Wasmixorox, June 80, 1880.—In 1876 c:ngress, enimated by the patri- otic_spirit incident to the centennial cel bration of Amerigan independence, then current, approj ed $200,000 to complete the unfin‘shed Wasking- ton monument, then, a3 now, a dis- grace to the United States This amount was insufficient to complete it according to the original design, and ce then the Washington monument commissicn, conatituted by that aot, have been endeavoring to recure a plan_of completion whose execution could be accomplished with the means at their disposal. As a prelim- inary m asure, bufore work uvder any new design conld be commenced, they dscevercd that the foundation of the monument must be strengthened. Ao o-rdingly one year ago congress passed an ect autherizing the strengthening of the fourdation of the mcnument, and assigning §100,000 for that pur- p:so of the §200,000 appropriated in 1876. Tho work then authorized has been presecuted slowly. Tt was sup- poaed that the foundation would be 2 completod in April st but it o not finishod up to this time. It is urder- stood, however, that ita eomrletion will be shortly accomplished. Qol. Casey, who has charge of the work pon the monument, has recently ad- vortirel fur 400,000 cubic feet of white marblo or grenite. The design for the comyletion of the monument, finally adopted by the monument com- mission, i4to oirry the monument to the height of 500 e t in stone, and to cap it with a pyramid of slono and glass, whose apex shall be 550 feet in height, thus towering eoma sixty feet above eny other structure on the earth. This pl+n received 1he uns mous upproval of the house distriot commuttee this sassion.
