With a Man on Board, who was Not Injured. Yesterday a thrilling accident hap- pened at Dewey & Stone’s furniture store. The elevator, located at the rear of the building, needing some re- plin about the machinery, yesterday was selscted as the time for doing the work, as the apparatus would not then be in use. The elevator platform had been hoisted to the fourth story, and a new rope was being attached to the hoist- ing machinery. It had already been tied to the weight in the cellar by an old sailor, who now drives an express wagon in {his city. Several of the employes in the fourth story were about to fasten the mew rope to the beam of the elevator, and had tied one knot around it, when one of the party, who does not wish his name mentioned stepped upon the platform to superintend the patting of supports under it to pre- vent it from going down. The mowment he stepped on the platform the rope gave way, and down went the whole An' Elevator Drops 64 Feet thing, with the passenger on'board. The nippers, which are supposed to fly out in such emergencies as this and fasten themselves in the sides of the shaft so s to stop the descent, failed to do 4 work efficiently, although they scraped the beams all the way down, and thus retarded the descent very slightly. But the descent was nevertheless made with great rapidity. The sailor below saw it start and got from under just in time to save his life. —TrE Osana Begsupplements can now be had at this office at ten cents apiece. —For sale or rent, cheap, American House.
