Again he gorged himself; again he raised the viands spread upon the Ewa, again and again he remarked, enthusiastically: ““This man should be encouraged; I intend to patronize him.” He was called to the bar, time after time, and then led by his enter— tainers to the table. From one place to another went the inffated Yankee, petted, puffed, treated and fed. He reached the zenith of his happiness about one o’clock Sun- day morning, when his star of pros- perity commenced to set beneath a cloud. The cheeky tramp found him- self under Marshal Ryan's care on Sabbath day, and was sent forth with empty script and purse to “encour- age” people. He said to the “round- ers” on_Sunday night, as he heaved a heavy sigh: “It must have been a dream. Everybody was friendly yes- terday, but now nobody knows me. How far is it to Sidney!” He pro- ceeded on his way, and is no doubt encouraging hotel and bar-keepers at Sidney. He is what the boys call a thoroughbred dead beat. April. Burlington Hawkeve. The month of April is the seventh month of the year. It was originally the thirteenth, but in 1302, Augustus Ciosar changed the calendar because he had a note to meet in the middle of the month, and didn’t have a cent to pay it with, and so he dropped that month out entirely, and April thus became the third month as it is | now. It was named after Aprilis, the god of spring, who used to get up on head. “‘Well, then, how do you sell straw- berries 7 Our reporter did not hear the price, but the man with the basket fainted dead awa, The Advantage ofHaving Good Stock. In a recent number of The National Live Stock Journal is illnstrated the advantage and profit of keeping good stock. A farmer in Illinois had taken to market a car-load of cattle and two cars of hogs—fourteen head of the former and one hundred head of the latter. The cattle averaged 1,483 pounds in weicht, and sold at £5.00, making §1,048. The hogs weighed, average, 496.3 pounds, at $4.35, mak. ing 81,158.70. Total for hogs and cat- tle, $3,195.90. The market reports for that day showed the average price for steers to be $4.35,and for hogs $£3.85. This farmer then realized 65 cents per one hundred pounds more by having a good stock of cattle than if he had had medium or average, and he got fifty cents per one hundred pounds more for his hogs than if he had even an average lot; so that his actual profits, above what he would have received from common stock, amounted to nearly $1,000.
