Bherift Everhart and posse are in close pursuit of Bass and party.” eacific freisht car No. 995, v uch arrivad at the depot in 1 ue city on Saturday evening, con- talued & tramp, or possibly two tramps, who had stolen a ride from Ban Francise>. It was loaded with tbales of sheep pelts, which reached 30 within about two feet of the ceil - 1ng of the car. The car was per- fectly tight and direct from Nan Francisco, and its locks and seals had not been disturbed. Oun Sun- dny afternoor, when ali around was still, the tramp broke out with & fish-brace, by smashing a hole in ithe panel on the side of the car. He was not seen by any ome at the platform:. He had done no special damage mside of the car. He had adark ride. —VYesterday we mnoticed that there were but three or four persons at work on the oity stone pile. We thought that there were nine or ten tramps sent there out of tbe thirty- nine arrests made on Saturday night, but we find on Inquiry that there were not that many altogether even before Judge Anderson, who discharged most of those who were brought to the Police Court. It seems that the work of the “Com- mittee or Bafety” was not nearly so etisctive was reported. A veryfew tramps were arrested, and most of them appeared to be innocent men and willing to work. The majority of those arrested by tne *‘commit- tee” appear to have been citizens ‘who were out rather late, and who, upon their identity being establish- ed, weve at onoe released, and no complaints were made agamst them. We have heard considera. ble talk both for and against the aidof the “Committes of Safety,” and the conclusion we have arrived atis that such work, if found neces. sary, should be left in the hands of an efficient police force, say of ten or twelve good men, to which num- ber the force will probably be in- creased, as it certainly ought to be. ~—Tbe Union Paecific express which was sent out yesterdsy ‘was the fiaest passenger train 1n the world.
