Kentucky produces over 100,000,000 pounds of tobacco, or considerably over one-third of the whole crop, also one-half of all the bemp produced 1 the United States. Thus while we eaunot furuish an entirely correct idea of the crops of our country, it will be seen from the foregoing siatement, which of cur States produce more largely of the wmportant crops of the nation. 1t is to be hoped that before the next census is taken, congress will adopt means to do this work each five years. ‘Ihus a great injustice to the growing population of the West, in Tepresentation t our national ss- sembly, will be done away with. It should also provide for taking s tics of the industries of the country, twlce as often as we now get them. We opine that when the next census is taken many persons will b sur. prised, not only of the vsst increass in the population of the West, but also at her immense production of all that goes to make up the natural prosperi.y of the nation. The Decpest Mines. Eureks (Nev.) Sentinel. Twenty years ago the deepest mining shaft in the world reached only 2,000 feet below the eurface. The very deepest, we believe, was a metalliferous mine in Hanover, which had been carried down to a depth of 2,290 feet. Ihe deepest perpendicular shait {o-day is the Adelbert shatt in a silver iead mine m Prozibram, in Bohemia, which has reached a depth of 3,280 feet. ‘I'he attainment of that depth was the occasion of a three days’ festi- val, and still further noticed by striking off & large number of com- memorative medals of the va!ue of a fionn each. There is no record of the beginning of work on the mine, although its writ- ten history goes back to 1527, Quite recently an elegant commem-« orative volume has been writien aud printed, which is most interesting reading to those who have a taste for either the aotuallties or antiqui ties of mining mdustry. There are two other localities, however, where a greater depth has been reached than at the Adeibert shaft, but not in & perpendicular line. These are: 1. The rock salt bore hole near Sperenberg, not far from Berlin, which a few years ago had been bored to a depth of 4175 feet. 2 The coal mine i Viviers Remus, iu Belgium, where the miners, by shaft-sinking, together with borin -, have reached & total depth of 3,42 feet. ‘Turniug from these two mines, no shaft in unbroken per pendicular iine has as yet exceeded the depth of 3,280 feet. Paine’s Death-Bed. To the Editor of tae New York World, Si—During a stay of a few montbs in Boutheast Missour1 I bs- came acquainted with a Mr. Spaul ding, & nephew of the late Arch- tishop Spaulding of Baltimore. He said he had often hesrd his uncle speak of the death of Paine. A cordiog to him. the Archbichop’ uncle or father had been eslled upon to visit Paine upon his ueath-bed. Some of Paine's friends asked him if he would not like to see ® mi; ter. Painesaid that ho had no ob- jection.” A Catholic_priest—Spaul- ding’s ancestor—and & Protestant minister were called in. They asked Paine if he had any objection to re- Iigious consolation in_ his dying hours. He politely told them, “Not any:” and fu conversing with them, he drew them into an argument with each other. While they wera arguing as to how he should be min- 1stered on, Paine turned h's face to the wall and calmly died. Mr. Spaulding said his uncle related this a3 lesson in charity.
