How a Young Shyster Practiced on the Confidence of His Friends. About two months ago & young mau named H. Lorenski, profess- ing ,to be & lawyer put in an appearance in Omaha, and added his name to the long list of embryotio Blackstones who are struggling to make a pre- carious living. He was hard up, and was not ashamed te acknowl- odge the fact. He wanted work; he must have something to do, and being & young man of indomitable energy and un- limited cheek—two of the many requisites necessary to success 1o thelegs profes:fon—hesucceeded in obtaining some employment as & oollector for various parties, and in addition to thishe managed to pick up a little practice. After wiLning the confidence of several p:rsons he began to take advantage of that confidence, and yfter *besting the town” to the amount of several hundred dollars, he left for Chicago to-day. Among his victims was Jean Libert, the tailor, from whom he obtained a suit ofclothes, and which he paid for witha worthless check on the Omaha Na.onal Bank, He collected meveral bills for Dr. Babcock and other per- sons, and from one man he got $100, which he did not accountfor. ¥rom acertain gentleman, whose name need not be mention, he borrowed two coats; a milliner was beaten out of & bat for his wife; and a young man is out & watch, which he lent to Lorenski, who wanted to wear it to Lincoln, where be pre- tended he had & law suit to attend to. His operations bacame known to those most interestod. and Lorenski thought it was about time to give his creditors and other friends the cold shoulitgr by leaving town, which he tried to do yesterday aftesngon, but he was detained at the Union Pacific depot by some of his vie- tims, who wanted to bring him to time. The Distriot Attorney was con- tne opinion that Lorenski had play- ed his game ¢ wej) that he had not made himself criminally liabla. Lorenski, however, gotaway this morning by the dummy, and left for Chicago by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railway. That fellow will yet make his mark at the bar. The street grading business has at last found its way into court, a sujt having been begun Friday by O. P. Hurford, guardian of Etta and Annie M Hurford,B. E. B. Ken- nedy, Anna A. Crary, Charlotte E. Turner, W. W. Lowe, E. O'Neill, and Addie T. Rhodes, and others, against the city of Omabs, City Treasurer Johnston, and A. J. Hans- com, to enjoin the city from levy- ing tte tax to pay fay for the grad- ing on St. Mary’s Avenue and Howard streets. The petition charges conspiracy as follows : Plaintiffs further say that a ma- jority of the property on the line of said street was tar more valuable for residence purposes, the oaly pur- oces for which 1t ever can ot will be used, before the alteration of said grade, than now; that said sireets Wero in good condition and traveled by all residents and others who de- sired, with ease and comfort, and the grade was sufficient as estab- lished in 1866 and 1868 aforesaid, to accommodate all persons for any ordinary vehicle of travel, But the piaintiffis charge the fact to be that the defendant, Hanscom, being the owner of a large tract of land near the west end of said avenue having laid the same off into lots and blocks and desiring to sell and dispose of the same to the best advantage, but be- ing unable so to do until he could obtain a line of street cars to run out upon said Howard street and said avenue, and being largely in- terested in a line of street care known as the “Omaha Horse Rail- way Company,” and desiring for the benefit of his interests in said horse railway, as well as for his in- terest in said land, to extend said railway out to said lands, did, as plaintiffs are informed, and believe. conspire with one Marsh, the ostensible owner of said railwav, and,at the times here- inbefore alleged, 8 member of said Common Council, and with one Gib- son and one Swobe, also members of said Council, who resided upon or near the line of sald street and avenue, to obtain from the said Common Council an order requiring the yrade of said strests as afore said to be ohanged a d graded,hold- ing out as an inducement to the other members of said Council, the grading of certain other streots In waid city, which would greatly en- hance the value of the property of the sald other members of tne said hody, and did by means of such inducements and the interests of the said Marsh Gigson, and Swobe, prooure the said order and the letting of the said contract asaforesaid. That tne change of grade and the ordering of saia grading, and the letting of the contract therefor, was induced by the said Hanscom, Marsh, Swobe, and Gilsson, hoping and intending thereby to benefit themselves, not for any public interest or benefit, but that the burdens thereby cre- ated would be too grievous to be Lorne.
