Agrieultural, Horticaltral and Industrial Expesition, (Correspondence of the Bsx) BrATR, Neb., Sept. 17. EprTor BEE: The attendance at the annual fair at this place was very good, but some departments were lightly rep- resented. The agricultural depart- ment was very good, and there was some exceltent samples of corn on exhibition. I will give as good a report as I can. As for the size of vegetables, eorn, ete., I report from measure- ment, and not from hearsay. There were two samoles of corn on the atalk, each measuring rospect- | ively eleven and twelve feet. A 1epresentation of shaker corn, (yel- low) which was very solid. broad grains, and measured six inches in circumference and nine inches long. It requires ten weeks from planting to get well ripened. Entered by Hiram Craig, of Fort Calhoun. A sample of common corn, which measured from 10 to 13 inches long, and from 73 to 9 inches in circum- | ference; specked corn from 10 to | 11 inches long, and from 6} to 8} ¢ inches in circumference ; samples of | white corn from 11 to 12 inches in length, ard 7} to 8} inctes in cir- cumference ; sweet corn from 8 inches long, and 6 to 7 inches in cumference. The above measure- men was the leng:h of coru on tho | cob. Display of water melons small, but very good, three of ono va —did not learn the name—s one size, one of wh ch 38 inches in circum ference; t weighed 130 pound~. A’ splendi repre<entation of squashes, o varieties, sixteen of one k . large and nearly all one siz ured one, which was two fe inches long, and fift cumfere ce; one, nearly round, was | four feet and two inches in circum- ference. Display - of earrots—av age nineteen Inches long, and eight and a half inches in cireun display of beets, which was from ten to twenty inches long, and eleven tonineteen Inches in circum- ference. Varlety of radishes few, but large, equal in size to the best beets. Varietles of cabbage few, but good for this year; one lot of six heads measuring from two feet nine inches to three feet in circumfer- ence. Oneseed from New Mexico, which was planted late, and did not mature, was & beauty but the h wasnot very solid. A good variet of potatoes—Neshanocs, Morton, Peach Blows—which were from two to three inches In diameter, and some six and seven inches long, and equally proportioned. isplay of apples was unusu- ally good, large, and of choice vari- eties, and varied in size, all of which were go-d and smooth. The Hawlsy, a yellow, which measured eleven to twelve inches in circum- ference; the Bailey, sweet, which averaged twelve mches in cireum- ference; Northern Spy, eleven and d ma chickens of this years raising, | probably as good as the county af- | fords. Sheep, pleaty in the county and only one Buck on the grounds. Display of hogs was good, about twenty Poland China and Berk- { shires; on the whole the representa- | | tion of the county was good, not- | withstanding the excoeding dry | woather of this season, and eould | have been far bettor had all who were able in_tne county taken an interest in displaying the fruits of | their own resources. To-day an election of officers for | the ensuing ycar was had before adjournment, and to-morrow will probably be’a larger crowd, when the premiums will be distributed. While you correspondent 1s writ- ing, those fond of exorcise are trip- ping the light fantastie tos, at the | opera house, whilo the Blair baad is | discoursing its favorite strains of music.
