Mayor Dunn One of Three Defendants as Result of Flying Mortar When Wall of Old Jordan Block Was Blown Down. Mayor Daniel P. Dunn, Fire Chief Thomas P. Foley, John Kelley, assist- ant superintendent of the Willimantic water works, and the city of Williman- tic were made defendants in two civil suits amounting to $35,000 brought by Warren Worth and Frank Ladue through their attorney, Charles A. Capen. Property of the three officials have been attached. The damages claimed are the result of plaintiff being struck by flying par- ticles of cement, mortar or stone Nov 25, 1916, when the rear wall of the old Jordan ‘block was blown down by the city employes, Worth asking for 000 and Ladue $10,000. The papers were served by deputy Sheriff Greenslit and are returnable before the VWindham: county superior court the first Tuesday in December. According to the writs, both men were standing in the ailey which leads off of Railroad street, between two spur tracks. Mr. Worth was.about 30 feet from Railroad street, shile Mr. Ladue was 30 feet from the sireet. Eleven charses of dynamite, amount- ing to 50 pounds, were used in blowing up the rear wall, and the writ states that the defendants knew. of the pow- er of the explosive, did then and there negligently and carelessly cause said 50 pounds of dynamite to be exploded at one blast. e Mr. Worth recelyéd a. gdmpound fracture of one Jeg and séverallacera tions, while Alr. Lague was. bit. in_the right leg with. a ilarge particle which made a Hole in:his-leg, fracturing and bruising it, and"there’ .were. secveral contusions of his left leg- and body. Both were patiénts ~at * St. Joseph's hospital for a long time and both claim that they were permanently disabled. At.the time of #he wrecking of the wall ‘& very large erowd of people as- sembled -and many were injured. William ,E. Webber, who was on a packing box to take a picture of the falling - wall, was ‘struck, kmocked off of the box and his leg was broken. A moving picture oberator .who was at that time taking pictures, here for The Romance ‘of Willlmantic Was near Mr. Webber and his camera was knocked down. Giles Alford.was hit and died a few days later in St. Joseph’s hospital, to which institution most of the in- jured were rushed: The men on whbom the' papers were served had wariied the people, but the crowd was too large to take any notice of the warning, as it had been adver- tised all the forenoon, which was Sat- urday.
