One of the agencies which has contributed to the commanding position of Connecti- cut in the school of commerce was the establishment, by James Hislop, John Porteous and Archibald Mitchell, of the business now conducted by The Por- teous & Mitchell Company of this =ity and which is this week commemorating the forty-fourth anniversary of its cs- tablishment. During the almost half a century that has marked the span of business activity of Messrs. Porteous & Mitchell, there has gone forth into the marts of trade any number of enter- prising young men who received their business training under the tutelage of the founders of the business, and whu have achieved success either as mor- chants conducting their own establish- ments or in managerial positions of responsibility. It was'in March, 1873 that the bus- iness of The Porteous & Mitchell Co. was founded and the history of its growth and progress is one of the ro- mances of American commercial suc- cess. The first year's business, while satistactory, -was necessarily-somewhat in the nature of pioneer work, but be- cause of the progressive metands adupted, the store prospered from the start. They introduced the “one price to all system” n policy which was prac- tically unknown in mercnandising in Norwich, up to the time of the com ing of the young merchants. TLey further saw to it that every customer got a nups deal and they had the strength .of character to be honest in the days when storekeeping honcety was not common, axd the genius and ability to prove that deception was not neceseary to successful seliing. It was not long before the original store was too small for the rapidly growing b iness. Ome addition followed another, culminating A 1906, when the prescnt store was developed, giving them the largest department store in easterr Connecticut. Advantageous Buying Connections. Messers Porteous & Mitchell are now interested in three stores, the other two being located, respectively, in Grand Rapids, Mich, and Portiand, Me. It is not only by these several branch stores that the company has In- creased its buying capacity; they are one of the founders of and hold a mem- bership in the Dry Goods Union of New York city, with a central office at 432 Fourth Avenue. This is one of the largest organizations of its kind in America, with a purchasing power of more than twelve millions of dollars annualiy Cemplete Stocks of Merchandise. But while The Porteous & Mitchell Com.pany is récognized as the largest business institution of its kind in east- ern Connecticut, it is not its great size alone that interests the buying public. Rather, it is the variety and character of !x_‘he stocks_of merchandise. which it carries !.hl& !'8-1 greatest appealing force, ’l&’flflm\u & Mitchell com] Store has not spread out into t ‘mhny diverse lines as have some of the metropolitan department stores, yet there has been the broadest possiblq development in merchandi ing the lines of goods which the store features. There is everything in home furnishings, includigg rvss, draperies and kitchénware, housenold linems, dress goods and silks and the many accessories that are in daily need. In women's_and chlldren’s apparel, milki- nery and boys’ clotbing, Tho Portcous & Mitchell company has a reputation that is uhexcelled. Of Interest to Men. The store caters to men as well as women and has a splendidly equipped men's department with a separate en- trance. The display of men's wear is unusually complete. The Porteous & Mitchell company specializes in men's clothing, both ready-to-wear and cus- tom- wand in addition to their | clothing line, which includes the pro- Quct of some of the best makers in the country, they are local agents for The Royal Tailors custom-made clothing, Stain-Bibch- smars clofide, aud The P. & hat.
