Grain Elevator and Grist Mill of C. W. Campbell Co. Burned —Firebug Suspected—Property Well Insured—Nearly 125 Sign Up for Constabulary—Dennis Keegan’s Shoes Fit Footprints at Coop Where Chickens Are Missing ! Many visitors in Westerly Thursday viewed the ruins of the C. W. Camp- bell & company grain elevator and grist mill_that was destroyed by fire early in the morning at an estimated loss " of $150,000. Throughout the morning guards were on watch for sparks that might ignite surrounding buildings. It was considered a miracle that more buildings were not con- sumed. Had it not been for the good fight put up by the local and visiting firemen, the loss must have been much greater. Guardsmen of the Fifth company discovered the fire at about 4 o'clock yesterday morning and an alarm was Sent in to the P. S. Barber Hose com pany, but as scon as the seriousness of the blaze was realized a general alarm called out the firemen on both sides of the river. The Hoxie com- pany of Mystic and emploves of the Westerly Textile company also offered assistance. In spite of the fact that the firemen hal several streams of water playing on the mill, it was im- possible to check the progress of the flames, so for the most part the efforts of the men were confined to saving adjolning property. It is the general belief that the fire was set, and poiice of Stonington and Westerly were a: work yesterday in an attempt to solve the mystery. The management of the company was carried on jointly by Clifford Campbell and Harvey Perry. When asked Thursday concerning the prob- able losses sustained, Mr. Perry re- plied that at the present time it was impossible to state. He said that a large amount of grain had been burn- ed, together with the building. Dennis' E. Keegan, a laborer, was arrested yesterday by the local police for the theft of six chickens from the hen yard of Mrs. Edgar Sweet, at the corner of Morgan and West Broad streets. The police feel confident that Keegan has knowledge of the theft, a: his shoes appeared to fit tracks left from the hen house, and Mrs. Sweet says she is positive of the identifica- tion of one of her fowls. Officer Chase was finishing his night patrol when his attention was attracted by a man try- ing to sell undressed fowls to a pos- sible purchaser on Canal street. The chicken man was then taken into cus- tody to await developments. The Fifth company exhibit, which has been held during the past few days in the Rhode Isiand House block, has hot been without results. Temporary qua ters have been taken in the People's Mission. It is understood that a sub- stantial amount of insurange was car- ried. About 122 citizens of Westerly igned their names to show their will- ingness to co-operate in the formation of a constabulary in Westerly. It is expected that many more signatures will be obtained before the end of the week. - Beautiful Shoes For Spring Dame Fashion has decreed that Women’s Footwear shall be more beau- tiful than ever.
