Those Items Excess of Those of Last Y The increased cost tc ths state of running penal and charitable institu- tions 1s shown by the recent expefi ence of the board of" directors of fhe state prison, who found that for three ftems, potatoes, flour and coal, bills this year were $10,000 in excess of those of a year ago. SEARLS RESIDENCE STONED Dynamite Blast at Dr. Miller Place Sends Rubbish Flying. the generosity of the public for a cheerful holiflly. The old and feeble A Dblast of dynamite set off at the Dr.' Miller place in Thompson Mon- day afternoon caused a_bombardment of the residence of State Attorney Charles E. Searls, just across the street, and scattered debris all over the neighborhood. Late in the after- noon Mr. Searls, who was not at home at the time the blast was set off, said that he was investigating the cifcum- stances attending the happening and that he hoped to know all about it, so as to -place responsibility, in a very short time. r Stones as blg as small pumpkins were hurled across the street to the Searls_ place. Some of these stones fell on’ the roof, others went over the house and on to the back lawn. where two maids of the Searls household were engaged in hanging out clothes. A shower of rocks and other material lted down about them, but neither of the women was struck. Branches were torn from trees on the Searls estate by the storm of |’ stones, some of which imbedded them- selves in the lawn, panes _of glass were also cracked. Members of the Searls household were frightened, but all_escaped injury. Changes and improvements that are being' made at the Dr. Miller place made necessary -the use of dynamite for blasung.
