' 'NORWICH BULLETIN. SATURDAY, JULY 1, 1916 s to get more or less wet and dirty. But 1 can’t find that a single one has died from weather conditions, and, perhaps because the cutworms are not amphib- ious, they are scarcer than I've ever Known before. When 1 look at my poor, unhappy, stunted and backward corn and am in- clined to grow low-spirited, I can turn my thoughts to the cabbage and to- mato patches and fairly hug mvself wiih_delight over the labor and loss which the season has thus far saved me. y 1 THE FARMERS TALK] TO FARMERS DO NOT LOOK FORWARD WITH EYES OF DESPAIR And did you read about the weather of 1816—just a hundred vears ago— as reported in a bulletin of the weather bureau? That year snow fell and ice made every month during the summer and all over New England. In western Massachusetts they had sleighing in June and the eix-inch snowfall re- mained for five days before it melted away. Ice formed half an ind thick on shallow ponds and still waters even in July and August. All tender vege- tables and crops were killed.
