New Haven, Conn., May 31. — The Yale university crew today declined an invitation to race at Christiania, Nor- way, on July 3. The invitation was extended personally to Captain Low by Jan Schierve of the Studenterf Roklub, a well known Norwegian row- club. The Yale authorities told who presented a handsomely engraved invitation, that the forth- coming_race would occur only ten days after the Harvard-Yale regatta at New London and it would be im- pessible to compete in such a short time. In the practice of the Yale crews to- day Coach Nickalls made a number of changes in the various boats. These changes will occur daily until a first crew is picked next week at Gales Ferry. Special Stocks Were Operated in by Cliques and Pools. ‘New Yorx, May 31.—The operations of pools and cliques in special stocks contributed very largely to today’s ob- viously professional market. Except for Lebigh Valley and Reading, which were active and strong at times, the railway list manifested little of last week's animation, despite the issuance of numerous brilliant statements of earnings over the holiday. Norfolk and Western, however, rose to the new high price of 125 3-8, allow- ing for the reduction of its regular and extra dividends of 2 3-4 per cent. Other standard stocks were obscured by the prominence of motors, rubbers, minor steel and iron issues, Mercantile Marine preferred and some of the mu- nitions. New maximums were regis- tered by two of the automobile group, Chandler Motors rising 3 1-2 to 108 1-2, with Lee Tire up 1 3-4 to 54 1-4. Mexicans, particularly oils, were dis- posed to advance at the outset, but lost considerable ground later on publica- tion of the tenor of the Carranza note, which created fears of renewed complications. International Harvester es were perceptibly strengthened by the increased earnings disclosed in the annual statements of the domestic and foreign companies, and copper and zinc shares were under reduced pres- sure. The hollow character of the day’s trading was evidenced by the ease with which prices shaded in the final hour, Reading leading the deciine and chang- ing various ret gains.to moderate re- cessions. Total sales amounted 355,000 shares. More gold from Canada for account of the Bank of England brought total imports of the metal on the present movement up to about $23,500, and tended to harden exchange rates in London and Paris. - ‘While the demand for finished iron and steel continues to show some to FINANGIAL AND COMMERGIAL Detroit, May 31.—Opportune hits gave Detroit a 7 to 4 victory over Chicago today.
