Running him a close second was pret. ty Valarie Valaire, the charming lit- tle leading lady of the company who won instant favor with unusually clever work. As Jen Galbraith she showed excollent talent and careful study. Others of the cast who deserve mention_are George Manning, Milton Brron, John Fowles, Charles Hillman and Miss Brasch. The scenic embellishment was ex- cellent, the third act especially bring- ing forth most favorable comment. The Birth of a Nation gives the facts of history with a straightforwardness and fidelity for truth that has caused many to protest, for in the south the histories studied by the children give an entirely different version of the great struggle of 1861 than that which is given in the schools of the North. The sidelights on history, the various cpisodes that are visualized for the spectator are all authentic. Not only did Dayid W. Griffith have the Brady pictures of actual battles and events to fall back upon, as well as the lead- Ing generals, .who are now living to describe and assist in absolute accur- acy being obtained, but he also had the aid of the United States government. The spectator realizes after seeing this picture that he has learned as never before more actual history of the Civil War than he ever knew before. The question will arise in the minds of many: “Why are so many facts kept from the students in the school: of the North, and why should the vecple of the South be given a differ- ent version than the people of the week.
