Rev. Elijah F. Smith; who was pastor of the Old Mystic Methodist church about 30 vears ago died last week_at his home in Gurleyville. Rev. Mr. Smith supplied the pulpit of the local Methodist church seven years ago for the summer months. He is survived by two sons, Harry and Fred- erick Smith of New York, and two daughters, Mrs. Willam Harvey of New London and Miss Ida Smith of Gurleyville. Engineer Louis Anderson of the State Arsenal, Hartford, was here last weels and started the machinery at the pumping station to fill the big 60,000 gallon water tank on the military field. It required only a few days to fill the tank. Dr. and Mrs. Everett S. Warner have opened their residence on Penn- sylvania avenue, after spending the winter in New York and St. Augus- tine, Fla. John Bogue has men at work dlg- ging a cellar for his new home on the Flanders road. Mr. and Mrs. Waterman of Hart- ford, summer visitors to the Grove, came, down in their car for a short stay in the Pines Sunday. The fishermen of the Grove are re- porting good catches in the river. Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Bell, who have been occupying their cottage at West Palm Beach, Fla., during the winter intend to remain there over the summer instead of returning to their cottage in the Grove for the summer months. Mr. and Mre. M. B. Haynes are busy putting the grounds in shape as weil as_the interior of their new home. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. News was received here this week of the death of Rev. John A. Peake, who was_ stricken with apoplexy While on the street in Salt Lake City, Utah, and expired immediately. The body was taken to Mountain Home, Idaho, for burial Rev. Mr. Peake was pastor of the Baptist church here ten years ago, and was very highly esteemed by all. Mr. Luddington resigned but owing to an almost unanimous vote of the church not to accept his resigmation he decided to_remain for another year.
