Perkins of Jewett City the Winner During the Afternoon. The medal contests under the au- spices ofethe Canterbury Woman's Christian Temperance union were heid July 21. afternoon and evening. The plan for the afternoon was an out of door contest and a picnic in the town hall; but the heavy shower drove the women and children under cover of the hospitable Methodist church, and there the programme was well carried out m spite of thunder and storm. Six girls and two boys were contestants for the L. T. L. silver medal, which was won by Charles H. Perkins of Jewett City, who is with his aunt, Miss Grace Daw- ley, for the summer. All the boys and girls spoke exceedingly well and were presented little cameo pins in token of appreciation of their willingness and effort. They were Elsie Rodler, Florence Christian, Elise Hawes, Maud Graves, Daisy Ladd, Elmer Ladd and Ingleborg Olsen. There was a_solo by Mrs. Speerli, Molly and the Baby, and several recitations by boys and girls not in the contest. Ten children gave the temperance acrostic. They were Georgie H. Contrell, Eilsie Coombs, Pearl Christian, Helen Brown, Alfred Utz, Fred Speerli, Doris Olney, Arthur Christian and Elsie Coombs. D. Wil- son of Canterbury. Miss Speerli Won. More of the men and grown people of the town could come to the even- ing contest, and the church was weil filled. The leader was Mrs. Jaccb Speerli and there was singing by tae choir of the church with Mrs. Bush- nell and Arthur Tracy. Mrs. William Rollinson sang the solo of the even- ing.
