MAYOR’S OFFICE, City Hall, 5 Norwich, Conn., June 2nd, 1914. To the Citizens of Norwich:— : Since it has been planned to note on Saturday, June 6th, 1914, the 255th Anniversary of the Founding of Norwich, and in connec- tion d:uewifl_:,ontll‘following day, Sunday, June 7th, Benefactors’ Day, when the people may give public expression of their obligations to the living and dead for favors and gifts to our fair city; l!ow, therefore, I hereby recommend to the citizens a prompt = andhea.rtyno-opclfionwilhthilmovementtonhwfl.ntthelivilu are held in grateful honor and the dead in reverent remembrance; And, furthermore, I would hereby suggest that on Friday, the fifth day of June, in all our schools, some convenient portion of the day be devoted to recalling the early history of Norwich, that there, may be fitting deference to those who, with strong faith God, planted in an unknown land the foundations of this city, giving to its development of their substance and their labor and their character. And I would recommend that as far as possible there be recognition of those who came after them, through whose life'work and energy and integrity we inherit, not only the material advantages of a beautiful dwelling-place, but the example of their industry, generosity, sacrifice and the inspiration of their recorded good deeds and wide-reaching public spirit. What they have done cannot fail to prove to our chil- dren a stimulus to higher citizenship, local pride and noble living for all that advances a town’s honor and good name. And on Founders’ Day proper, Saturday, June 6th, I would rec- ommend a general recognition of the anniversary by the displaying of the Flag of our beloved country, the ringing of the church bells be- tween the hours prescribed, and the assembling of as many of our citizens as can conveniently be present when the children of the city and town gather in Union Square for the singing of patriotic songs. With full confidence that the clergymen of Norwich never fail in their part toward any movement for moral, social, or patriotic uplift, I would recommend that each devote whatever time his best judgment suggests, during Sunday morning, June 7th, to impressing the lessons of gratitude due the past generations and past generous givers, from those who daily and hourly benefit by their good works. And for the public meeting set for the hour of 3 o’clock on Sun- day afternoon, in the Davis Theatre, let our citizens gather with full appreciation of the spirit of the occason, that in recalling what has been done for us we may be given new courage and ambition to take up our responsibilities, so that we may continue the work which those we are to honor have so worthily begun, inspired to new ideals in all our relations of life and association with our fellow men, to union of aim and spirit for the bettering and broadening of our civic life. (Signed) TIMOTHY C. MURPHY, Mayor of Norwich. SELECTMEN'S ENDORSEMENT We, the undersigned, Selectmen of the Town of Norwich, heartily concur in the above recommendations of His Honor, the Mayor, that Founders’ Day and Benefactors’ Day be participated in by all the people, on this, the 255th Anniversary of the purchase of the town site of Norwich.
