TWO SISTERS ACCUSE TWO CHAPMAN BROTHER! Fred and Edward Chapman of Water- ford Held -for Superior Court. Fred :Chapman, 80, and Edward| Chapman, 32, of Waterford, brothers, were arrested Friday near the Mont- ville iine, charged with statutory rape. They were takenlnto cuistody by State Folicemen Jacksbn and Downing 2nd| Deputy Sherifi Martin. Both con- fessed. The Chapman brothers are charged with assauMs on Alice Cushman, 14, and Leila Cushman, 15, who are sis- ters. The mother of the girls made complaint to State Attorney Hull on Thursday and State Policemen Jack- son and Downing were in New London at the time. They were immediately| assigned to investigate. The state policemen went to Water- ford Thursday night and secured state- ments from. the girls. Friday morning, with the assistance of Deputy Martin, who knew the Cbapmans. through hav- ing arrested them previously for theft, they hunted up the accused. ITred Chapman was in Montville and when faced by the accusations of the girls confessed completely.~ Edward Chap- man, who was In New London, denied the charges of the Cushman girls un- ) shown the confession signed by his, brother. The officers brought both men to New London by auto at two o'clock, got dinner and then with Warren B. Burrows, representing the state attorney’s office as prosecutor, and with Justice of the Peace Morris Lubchansky Wwent into Waterford, where court was held. The Chapman brothers were bound over to the superior court and in de= fault of bonds were taken to the Franklin street jail and locked up. GILBERT COMPANY CASE TAKES A NEW TURN.
