There will be another big show of three acts at this popular playhouse next Monday, Tuesday and Wednes- Aay will be headed by Signor “Valerio and his marine band of 15 pieces. This band has been playing ~with great success throughout New England and so great has been its Success in some towns that it has played weturn engagements in those same towns within a period of a few ‘weeks. Signor Saja claims every mem- ber of his band to be a celebrated so- Joist, including two ladies, Miss May Zinper, cormet soloist, and Miss Ger- tirude Zinner, the famous violinist. This band is booked to appear here the first haif of the week and will no doubt prove a big drawing card. Next in e lineup for Monday !s a very clever sister team, Hylands and Farmer, who were secured at the last moment, necessitating the canceling of another good act already booked in, ‘but beocause of the high recommenda- tions of this sister act the manage- ment thought it wise to do all they could to secure it. Dave Kindler, the whistling virtuoso, will round out the bill in good shape, making three corking good vaudeville numbers for the first half of the week. Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, a very fine two- reel picture, in which the popular King Baggott plays the leading role, will be shown on Monday and Tues- day. BSome show! BREED THEATRE. The Woe of Battle, the Kalom Unex- celled War Story. One of the Kalem war stories for which this great producing company is famous is the feature at the Breed today and is entitled The Woe of Bat- tle. Included among the many stir- ring and strenuous scenes one where the federals fire upon a passing stern-wheel steamer, which returns the fire, There is a terrific battle be- tween the confederates confined in a ockhouse and the spunky federals. The federals are victorious and burn the blockhouse, a truly spectacular | in two reels, and tells the well known and Shylock for the hand of heiress. The production ls :nost lavish one and the parts are n the hands of very capable actors nd_act another ves e comedy is supplied by Will Willie Win. DAVIS THEATRE. A show that is full of variety, pleas- ing in every respect, is on at the Davie today. Heading the vaudeville < Gregorie and Elmina Co., a trio who do some remarkable feats with heavy furniture, such as sofas, tables, chairs, s, balancing those articles on their :ads and running up and down 1adder: their eves. Some of the articles are as much as an ordinary man can lift, not to mention the balancing part. The Bretons do an amusing skit, introdue- ing singing and lots of real good edy. Dan J. Harrington, with dummy friend, makes laughs for both voung and old. The photoplays are al} good and include The Mysteries of aris in_four reels, also the famous Mutual Weekly. Comedies and dra- ‘mas complete the bill. Next week a number of new acts and photoplays will be eeen here, headed by Horne Purnell & Co. in a bright comedy playlet, The Way to. Win a Woman, which ‘should interest all young men Wwho are looking for knowledge on that subject. The other two acts are The Holdsworths in a musical novelty, and Cowboy Williams & Co.. the cannon- ball jugglers. A real sensational fea- ture photoplay is Conquered. and the comy of the season, A Strong Re- venge, are a few of the features for next week. EDUCATIONAL NOTES. *The greatest waste in education is not mad teaching,” said a speaker at the recent meeting of school super- Intendents, “but teaching things the twentieth century does not need.” High-school enrollment in South Carolina has risen from 4812 to 8902 in the past 6 years, and the amount paid for salaries of high-school teach- ers has more than doubled in the same period. Cincinnati has. tried compulsory vocational training and is well satis- fied with the result. The boys and girls did not like it at first, apparently begause of the compulsory feature, but now seem to take to it with enthusi- asm. The school authorities have had the hearty.co-operation of the manu- facturers in the work Mississippl hag built 27 county ag- ricultural high schools in the past two years at an average cost of $30,000 per school. These schools furnish oard and dormitory facllities for $5.50 per month, and the boys and girls are paid a certaln amount per hour for the work they do, so that in most cases the expense to the pupll is re- duced to about 33 per month. _ More than a million people tock ad- vantege of the ‘“educational trains” zent through the rural districts last year by the State Agricultural colleges of 51 states, according to figures com- piled by F. B. Jenks, of the United States Bureau of Bducation. In this way the colleges have brought knowi- edge of improved methods of farming home to many wWho would probably never have been reached in any other way.
