The First Congregational Sunday school held its Christmas exerci Wednesday evering in the church lors. Scholfield, who died sud- &t his home here on Monday at 11 o'clock a. m., WAs conversing time with two friends with he had just closed a business ion. Mr. Scholfield had been in health for some time. He was ; high esteem by all whojknew was the oldest male resident tville, having been born in Stonington June 8, 1817, He was the wsecond son of the late Joseph and Mercy Newbury Scholfield. He moved with his parents to Montville when he . was 17, but three years later, in 1837, returned to Westerly, where he took charge of 0. M. Stillman’s woolen mill, the former property of his father. Aft- er a few months he went west, stop- ping in Cleveland and Akron, Ohilo, where he remained for several months. He returned to Montville and in 1840 went to Lowell, Mass, becoming sec- ond hand on the looms in the Middle- wmex mills, After remaining there three years he came back again to Montville and began manufacturing satinets in partnership with his brother, Joseph Arthur. This partnership continued for three years, and then he moved to £alem, Mass, where for another three years he was foreman of weaving in the Naumkeag mills. He then return- #d once more to Montville, since which time he had been engaged in the man- ufacture of woolens and twine. Mr. Scholfield 1s survived by his widow, who was Phebe F.
