S At S Do. 2d pfd .. Perdue tn 7 New--York, Aug. 13—Dealings in stocks today were of a singularly con- fusing character. Trading was mod- erately large in the first hour. Later it fell off to minor proportions, but at no time was there marked strength i those issues which constitute a po- tential speculative force. For the greater part of the session favorites like United States Steel and the Harriman and Hill issues moved within narrow limits, when not un- der restraint, while Reading and Le- high Valley were obviously under pres- sure. In fact, Reading's h iness was a foremost feature of the day. There was a continuance of the up- ward movement in shares of such southern transportation lines as Lou- isville & Nashville and Atlantic Coast line, the buying being stimulated by circumstantial detalls concerning forthcoming developmentg in the first named property. Unusual strength was also mani- fested by the Gould group as repre- sented by Denver & Rio Grande com- mon and preferred, and Missouri Pa- cific, while Eries, too, were in de- mand. * Coppers and General Electric, as well as Southern, Railway preferred were very active at higher prices in the final hour, the market making a fairly strong close after another spell of weakness in the anthracites, Un- jon Pacific and a few other prominent issues. London's operations in this market were on a larger scale than recently. Purchases, mainly Steel, Amalgamat- ed Copper and the Erles probably to- taleq as much as 30,000 shares. General news included advices from steel trade centers pointing to una- bated activity and demand for fin- ishied products, and declaration of reg- ular Canadian Pacific dividends cou- pled with an excellent annual state- |ment by that system.
