CAMPBELL, spent | or Tralley Express] Samuel = Anderson, superintendent of the local lines, has communicated to the court of common council that it has the right to build an extension from a point in Shetucket street where the line branches off to Laurel hill, west a distance of 550 feet, with the right to put ip switches, poles, wires and appurtenances. ‘It prgys that the council will accept the plan for ex- tending the line so as to render avail- able the location of the track. A plan of the proposed extension accompa- nies the petition, showing that it is intended to extend the track in She- tucket street through the center of the street to a point at the foot of the hill some distance beyond the water- ing trough. It is desired to place nine new poles to support the wires. The extension is what the council has been working for, for some' time, in order to get the trolley express bus- iness off of Franklin square, where congestion is caused by the cars blocking traffic. It is understood that EDUCATIONAL CLASSES ARRANGED FOR Y. M. C. A. Others Will Be Pravided as Fast'as Interest Is Manifested. The educational class committee of the Y. M. C. A, of which William D. Tillsen is chairman, held a meeting on’ Monday afternoon at the Associa- tion buiiding to consider plans for the season and decided upon several fea- tures which will be conducted under its snpervision. There is to be an orchestra which is to be led by Raymond B. Eldred, and there is also to be a glee club, for which a leader is yet to be selected. In theclass work it was decided to | have a class in mechanical drawing, for which there has already been a demand expressed, while classes in other branches are to be formed as fast as a sufficient need of them be~ comes evident. It was also decided to start a class for Tralians in the study of English. Assistant Secretary J. H. Ely will be the instructor and it is hoped to get this class started by October 30. It is the intention of the educational department also to serve as a bureau of Information to those desiring edu- cational advantage, guiding men to the best ways of obtaining the in- i struction they need if it furnished through the regular asso- ciaiion channpels. The committee members, besides the chairman named, are Frank H. Foss, Herman Alofsin 2d, and Raymond B. Eldred who met in conference with General Secretary F. R. Starkey. MILKMEN’S BOTTLES. Derby People Do Not Return Them ana Are to Be Charged for Them. B \ Milkmen of the associated towns are complaining about the bottles they loan to people containing milk. A lar number of the and Derby buy milk in the bottle and never return the hottle. On each bot- tle as it goes out are the words, “Wash and return,” but some reorle do not heed them and either destroy or keep the bottles. Then again some people do not even wash out the bottles, but ssimuly return them without thinking of the danger they place hundreds of other people in. Some of the milkmen receive the bottle filled with suds, and they have to scour them. This uses up a great amount of time and holds the milkman back in his daily duties. Thig can be remedizd by every house- wife cleansing the bottle before she returns the same to the milk dealr. ‘Thn alsc when theyv receive the hottles they should leave them out the following morning for collection by the milkman, who will use them again. This a large number of the house- keepers do not do and it causes a great amount of complaint. One deal- er purchased ten gross of bottles nine residents of Shelion months ago and can now only lay claim to about four gross. He can not tell where the other six gross have gone. To’remedy this, the milkmen of the associated towns have combined, it is said, are are goilng to tax the house- keeper for retaining the bottles. A petition received by the executive committee is for the acceptance of Maple Grove court off Asylum street, where a number of building lots have been laid out, but no buildings have yet been erected. The need of continuing the improve- ments to the streets by putting in more brick pavement in the future is being agitated and will likely come before the executive committee at a jater meeting. It is understood that there is a desire for the extension of the brick pavement from Franklin square up Franklin street to Oak street or. Grove street, and the placing of it in Broadway as far as Bath street and also in Shetucket street. Instead of brick it is possible that an effort will be made to have the granite blocks which would be taken up, split'and set in cement as are the brick. This is done with great success elsewhere, it is claimed, and makes a solid pave- ment, which is not so smooth as brick and therefore can be used where there is a slight grade.
