BALCH’S INJURY BLASTS HARVARD’S SPEED PROSPECTS Varsity Eight and Four Were to Start , Warm Favorites. et no game; The injury to Gordon Baich, bow of the Harvard varsity eight, is a setback to Harvard’s prospects waich has come most inopportunely. Since Newton was placed at stroke last Saturday the varsity eight has shown the most rap- id improvement of apy time since the Cornell race. It is now necessary for Coach Wray to spend two or three days coaching George Mever, who has becn substituted for Balch, on form and rhyfkm before' the eight can be sent at its best speed. Wray hoped that nothing would interrupt the prog- ress of the crew this week toward finding its limit of speed just as the week of final time rows closes on Sat- urday. The change in the varsity four is also regarded as a misfortune. The Harvard quartette was easily the smoothest rowing boat on the river. Wray has been leaving. the four pretty much to themselves because of their self-acquired results. Trumbull has not mastered the finish which Meyer displayed. Handicapped by the two changes made necessary three days before the closing of time rowing, the Harvard eight and the Harvard four cannol now realize their speed possibilities. These were the races in which Har- vard was sure to paddie to the start- ing line a warm favorite, Conditions will be fairly even in both events, al- ihough the Crimson supporters are confident that their crews will nose out victory Baltic Clerks Lost at Jewett City. The Baltic Clerks went to Jewett City Thurslay afternoon and wers tritamed by the Clerks up there to the tune of 8 to 7. A fluke play in the ninth inning spoiled a certain victory for the Baltic Clerks. The Baltic men say that the Jewett City players ad- mitted after the game the play wasn't on the square. The Baltic team was composed of the following: Ham If, Woods ss, Paul 3b, Brown 2b, Cote p, Duval ¢, Rood cf, McGuire 1b, Dresher ire, Jacl‘ Moriarty of Jewett v. He has also been the heavy hit- ter of the N. F. A. nine, his long dis- tance wallops counting conspicuousiy at critical times through the league series. COACH KENNEDY GAVE A YALE 5-MILE ROW Also Correcting Individual Faults in Varsity Boat. Gales Ferry, June 23—The heaviest work for the Yale varsity today came in the late afternoon when the crew had a five-mile row. In the morning the distance covered on the river was short, .Coach Kennedy coaching in i dividual faul This afternoon the eight went own stream to the mile point and then, turning, pulled up the river as far as Allyns Point, from which point they returned to the float. The journey down was made in one stretch, that up to Aliyns Point in two, and the return from there to the floar in_one stretch. 1 The freshman eight was to have had a time row this afternoon over a mile course, but this was abandoned and they were sent down. to the Navy Yard and back. The fours had a short pad- dle, Cravne rowing bow in the fresh- man four. Julian Curtiss of New York and Cen. W. W. Skiddy of Stam- ford arrived at the quarters this aft- ernoon. HARVARD FRESHMEN TRAILING 3 LENGTHS IN 2 MILES Varsity Keeps on for Pime Row in 20.57. Red Top, June 23.—The Harvard varsity eight had a trial row over the four-mile course this evening, the time given out officially being 20.5 The freshman eight rowed the first two miles of the.course with the varsit: The time for the two miles was 10 ard when the varsity passed the mark the freshmen were three lengths in the rear. The start was made just as the tide began to epb and as there was no wind itiors were favorable for good time. Balch, who was injured wiile playing tennis a few days ago, rowed bow in the var and appar- ently stood up well under the strain. Although he limped considerzbly he walked from the quarters to the float. The fours had a short paddle. Gales Ferry, June 23.—Two of the Yale oarsmen, W. F. Howe, Jr., stroke of the varsity four, and J. W. Scully, who rows No. 3 in the varsity eight, had an exciting experience today while out in a small sailboat on the Thames Tiver near quarters. A sudden guts of wind overturned the craft and the men had to scramble over the boat quickly as it turned to avoid being thrown into the water. They had on board with them the bulldog mascot, Capt. E. P. Frost of the Yale crew and Man ager Randolph were nearby in a cat- boat and went at once to the rescue, taking the men aboard and to shors.
