On Wednesday evening in the board of trade rooms there ‘was a gathering of several well known citizens, and al- 80 members of the Business Men's assoc:ation, at a ‘meeting of the in- dustrial committee of the' board, for the purpose of hearing a proposition to start an automobile industry in this city, whereby a rumabout of standard specifications can be con- structed and placed on the market for £300. It was through Jehn Buckley that Dr. J. Milton Keeney of New York was induced to come to this city and lay his proposition before the hoard. They met = on the New York boat Tuesday night, and Dr. Xeeney agreed to come here and see if Nor- wich would take up his proposition. The matier was explained in detail o’ the gathering. on Wednesday evening and a most favorable impression was gained In regard to the matter, and Dr. Keeney is to return in a few davs with his plan for the crganization of a company and another meeting will bte held regarding the matter. [ The mechanical side of the propo- sition was t n up Wednesday eve- ning, Dr. Keeney showing a blueprint of the car which’it is proposed to build. He is by no means a,novice in the bus_ iness, having been brought up im. it, with years of experience and under- stands fully all.the details With him as a practical engineer is F. G. Mer- ritt of New York, who will probably accompany -him here next time. ‘The runabbut would be two-seaied, with a box on the back which would held two suit cases and other. arti- | clas. I{ 18, 2-two-cylinder car of 10 to | 12 horsepower, of attractive lines, and can be placed on the market for $500 at a profit. His idea would be to manufacture all the parts here and it | is his belief that a car can be gotten | out ready to use in sixty days from the blueprints. None of the cars of the type in mind has been manufactured, but Dr. Keeney wants to ‘start in bus-, CLAM CHOWDER Enjoyed at Central Baptist Church by | Rev. P. C. Wright's Bible Class. One idea is to have two electric lights on the front, not outside the car, but arranged in the hood. Dr. Keeney was questioned at length in regard to the plan of start- ing a.factory here and organizing a company. It.is the kind of an indus- try which the city is in the greatest need of and with the sufficient capital tc get it going there seems to be a gencral feeling of approval in regard to the idea. Dr. Keeney has built a car of somewhat different construction, which he tested out thoroughly and 1deas gained in that will be incorpor- ated in the new car. The car is one of excellent lines and attractive. appearance, large wheels and strongly buill, and the price at whic hit can be sold would create a demand for it which it is believed would keep a factory busy the year through. If Norwich decides to take the proposition and back it financially Dr. Keeney and Engineer Merritt will coine here and look after the mechan- ical end. Dr. Keeney desires to have the car built and put on the market. He had no plan of organization, but will perfect one and present it before the bodrd on his next visit here. Dr. Keeney said that he would manufac- ture all the parts and not secure them elseavhere and simply assemble the cur here, This will increase the number of employes for such a concern. = Damper for Stovepipe.
