Murphy, has bolted the cau- cus and will make a try for the office as an Independant candidate. In order o get his name on the official ballot it ‘was necessary teo have the signatures of Mfty legal voters on tha nomination papers and to file same with Town S Whipple by midnight of Wed- nesday. Mr. Biddles has complied ‘with that requirement and the nomina- tion papers have been forwarded to the secretary of state. The aection of Mr. Biddies is not ap- proved by the town committee. Contractor Cavanaugh has completed the work of rebuildifg the Pawcatuck Valley street railroad from Westerly to Watch Hill, having been relleved of the section near the Foster farm. Here a cut of four feet is to be made in the road and this work will be done jointly by the highway committee of the tewn of Westerly and the trolley company, and independent of Mr. Cav- anavgh's contract. Soon after the declination of Mr. Ca- pron to be a candidate for renomina- gion Mr. Utter declared that he was in no sense a candidate for the placs and would do nothing to secure delegates favorable to him, but that if the con- ventfon saw fit to nominate him he would gladly accept. The Westerly delegates, howav took a different view and put up a s fight for the nomination. They in- formed the special committee of five that if they failed to present any other name than that of Mr. Utter for the nomination that the matter would be taken up in the convention. The com- mittee decided to make no recommend- ation and it was a free-to-all contest. ‘There were three candidates, George H. Utter, Walter R. Stivers and Edward O. Arnold, and Mr v ward O.
