New York, Sept. 20.—The narrow limitations of the present stock market were marked again today by the way in whioh price movements exhausted thamselves before going far in either direction. The wholly professional par- ticipation 1n the trading serves to ex- plain this restricted movement. Op- erations are purely tentative and fai ing to develop any response zither in the way of selling from genuine holders or of demand intended to extend over the day’s end. the courage of the trad- ing 2lement does not suffice to carry operations beyond the danger line of small losses. The settlement of larger questions is awaited with determina- tion by the larger financial interests befor:: attempting any important trans- actions in stocks. The early advance was partly in re- sponse to th= London market, which took up the late recovery here where it left off yesterday and vpushed it somewhat further. Buying for London account was a factor in the strength shown at the outset here. The higher prices brought in realizing sales and reaction set in. The decline began about the time the finance committee of the United States Steel corporation was ready to go into session, and that stock led the movement. The fall in prices was nct continved to the end of the day and the net changes again proved small. A rise in the price of copper in Lon- don was cited and reports of curtail- ment of output by one of the copper mining companies of secondary grade was vointed to as an encouraging de- velopment in the copper trade. There Wwere rumors ‘put in circulation of the proposad entry into the Interborough- Metropolitan company of important banking interests, and on these rumors there was palpable realizing at the ad- vance which had occusred in those stocks on preceding days. This move- ment was partly responsible for the realizing in the| general list which de- cided he hterstnne of the market Reports of leskening demand for steel prcducts, of Increasing competition for orders and of coming further reduc- tions in the prices of leading linas helped to desress United States Steel Cnadian _Pacific Central Leather Central of New Chesapeake & Ohio Alton.
