There is_considerable intérest in the Westerly fire district speaial meeting, which is to decide whether the fire alarm system is to be extended to the newly annexed section, and fire pro— tection equal to that in the old dis- trict supplied. At the annual meet- ing there was misunderstanding as to the rights of taxpayers in the annexed district and in consequence only one resident attended the meeting. Al- though the annexation increased the revenue sufficient to permit of a re- duction from twenty cents on_each $100 of taxible property to fifteen cents, the meeting voted against the extension of the fire alarm system. The board . of water commissioners caused hydrants to be placed in its added section of the fire district, but it is urged that they are of little use as there is no fire alarm system to summon the firemen and apparatus in the event of fire, without dangerous delay. The petition that resulted in the 1s- suence of a call for the meeting is numerousaly signed and included the representatives of the New England and Smith Granite works, whose prop- enties were partially destroyed by fire in the past two years. There will be a mass meeting in the interests of the Laymen's Missionary Movement in Rhode Island at Provi- dence this (Tuesday) evening at which Westerly will be represented. At the convention held last November an ex- ecutive committee was appointed to take charge of the work in the state. This committee will make recommen- dations as tothe best methods to be adopted in the raising of funds for the movement. The principal speakers will be N. S. Hopkins, a medical mis- sionary in northern China end Rev. Buel O. Campbell of South Africa. There will be something doing in trolley line work in Westerly at an early date which will probably in- clude the rebuilding of the Pawcatuck Valley road to Watch Hill and the con— necting of the rails of the latter with the ralls of the Groton and Stonington road at the state line in the Broad street_bridge.
