_ Christmas muse. NEW LONDON COUNTY. MONTVILLE. The Week in the Union tist Church —S8kating Enjoyed—Funeral of Mrs. Moses Chapman. The Friday Evening club of the Un- jon Baptist church met at the chapel tor the rehearsal of the Christmas muysic. The young people have greatly en- joyed the skating. At the Baptist Church, At the Union Baptist church Sunday morning the pastor, Rev. George C. Chappell, spoke from the subject The Message of the Angel to an audience of 107. Misses Nellie Chapman and Grace Lyon and Mrs. Everett Chapman sang a beoutiful trio, Voices of the Night, and Miss Lyon and Miss Chap- man sang a Christmas carol as a duet, the young ladies’ choir singing the chorus, assisted by Mrs. George C. Chappell, violinist. The number of ecommunicants at the Lord's supper was unusually large. A special offer- ing was made for the Ministers’ Home oclety. Bible school followed, with the largest attendance during the present pastorate, 101. The pleasant Sunday evening hour, 6.30 to 7.30, was attended by 91 peo- ple. A 20 minute song service con- dueted by the instrumental trio, Mr. and Mrs. Chappell, flute and violin, and Mis Marion Henry, piano, was en- tered into heartily by the large chorus of voices. i The Young People's 'meeting was conducted by Mrs. Ray Woodmansee; topic, Crosing the River, the last of the Pilgrims’ Progress series. Rev. George C. Chappell sang the baritone solo, Calvary. Mrs. Chappell and Miss Henry played the selection, Andante, from Orpheus, as an offertory, At Home for Vacation. Principal James Murphy of the Pal- mer Memorial chool is spending the holidays with relatives at Dover, N. H. The Late Mrs. Moses Chapman. Mrs. Moses Chapman died at her home In Palmertown, Sunday night. Mrs. Chapman was i1l but a short time, and her sudden death was a great shock to her many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Chapman have been residents of Montville for 27 years, Mr. Chapman being first selectman at present. Mrs. Chapman was a member of the Old Lyme Baptist church for some years, but the last years of her life she was a faithful member of the Union Bap- tist church of this village. She is survived by her husband and three daughters, Mrs. Cora Hanney of Sa- lem, Mrs. Henry Church and Miss Lila Chapman of Montville. She leaves three sisters, Mrs. Angeline Bronson of Old Lyme. Mrs. Rrocway of Hadlyme and Mrs. Eliza Morley of New London, and three brothers, Albert and Charles Peck of Old Lyme, and Orrin Peck ofi Memphis, Tenn. The funeral services wera held at her home on Wednesday | at 10 a. m.. the pastor. Rev. George C. Chappell, officlating” The floral pleces were beautiful. Bruce were held at her sum- mer home in Pennsylvania avenue on ‘Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev, J. W. Knappenberger officiated. Mrs. Jane Maine Nye, widow of B. Frank Nye, who died at her home in Voluntown Monday, was a former res- ident here, a daughter of the late Cor- idon and Leonia Maine. Her age was 70. Burial was in the Old Plains Cemetery Thursday, Mrs, Willlam E. Tolhurst and two children,’ Ernestine and Helen, are in Providence to pass the Christmas va- we! cation. Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. MOOSUP Baptist Sunday School Elects Officers —Agent Transferred to Fitchburg— Boys Arrested and Fined. Last Sunday the members of the Baptist Sunday school clected officers for the coming year, as follows: perintendent, C. i. Burgess: assistants, Su- Mack Mott and Anthony Paromgano; Miss Orra Lighting Main Street. Men from Boston are busy stringing the wires and getting everything ready for lighting up Main street from the residence of Alfred Hyde to the Bap- tist church. The village schools all closed iait Friday for the holiday vacation of two weeks. John C. Werner, who for over a year has been the efficient agent of the Am- erican Woolen company, is to be trans- ferred to a similar position in Fitch- burg, Mass. The new man will be R. F. Schuouler of the Ray mills, Frank- lin, Mass. John Wallace of Delaware is visiting his sister, Mrs. J. Orville Main. Miss Esther Johnson of East Green- wich, R. I, formerly a milliner in this village, has been the guest of Moosup friends. Engine Struck Freight Truck. Last Saturday night some one bent on mischief pushed the freight truck from the depot platform a short dis- tance down and, directly across® the railroad tracks. When the midnight freight came along the engineer did not see it soon enough to avoid a col- lision. The truck was struck about midway and thrown quite a distance, entirely demolishing it. The coweatch- er of the engine was slightly dam- aged. Boys Arrested and Fined. Four boys were arrested last week by Sheriff G. R. Bliven and brought before Justice B. W. Danielson, charg- ed with molesting children on the school grounds and using Improper language to the teachers. All four pleaded guilty and were fined $1 and costs, which amounted ta nearly $3 each. The boys’ parents paid the fines. Reception to New Members. The Children of Mary held a recep- tion of new members last Sunday aft- ernoon in All Hallows’ church. Nine- teen new members were received into the society by the pastor, Rev. J. H. Broderick, who officiated at the cere- mony. A sermon appropriate to_ the occasion was preached by Rev. J. C. Mathieu.
