So_there will be added in the town of Westerly as a part of the trunk lines the new | roads' from Avondale to Brightman's pond and the Potter Hill road from the bridge to Pleasant street. _Theodore Hoxie had a fight with a vicious bull in Canonchet and succeed- ed in conquering the furious beast. Mr. Hoxie was about to change the gra: ground of the bull, and had just pulled the iron bar from the ground to which the bull was tethered when the tnimal dashed suddenly at Hoxie au@ pinned him to the ground, the hoins being on either side of his hody, just below the arms. He struck at ine beast, and finally was released bv the animal lifting his head as if tq_m; a fresh attack. Mr. Hoxie was on his feet in an instant and picking up the iron- bar repelled the attack. He struck the buli in the head several times, and then a dog came to the rescue and at- tracted the bull's attention. Mr. Hoxle finally secured the bull and tethered him securely. Mr. Hoxie was cut and bruised, bt escaped internal injury. His clothing was torn and he was nearly exhaust- ed. He was attended by a physiclan and will be confined to his bed for a fesv days. Joseph Graff, proprietor of the Mar- tin house, died suddenly early Mon- day morning, from chronic indig and heart trouble. Mr. Graff married the widow of Michael Martin ‘and came to Westerly about eleven years ago. He was of a pleasing disposi- tion and had many friends. I Dr. Garrison has filled an important post in the medical corps of the United States navy, and been recently transferred to_the naval school at Washington, D. C. The doctor is a graduate of Wesleyan university in the class_of 1900, and morried Miss Jen- nie Walsh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Walsh of Lincoln street. Al- though deeply interested in his work in the Philippines, the doctor was de- lighted to return to the States. It is very difficult to acquire the most meager knowledge of the language of the natives of the Philippines, as dif- ferent dialects prevail in the different provinces, but Dr. Garrison was able to master Tagalogy, the dialect spok- en by the natives in Manila, in the province of Luzon, where he was sta- tioned. ~ He reached Vancouver, B. C., on Sunday. September 5, and went direct to Washington, where he re- ceived his commission, and will have the chair of medical 00logy and kin- dred branches in the naval achool.
