Harvard's football season begins this week with daily practice, and from now until the final game of the year, Coagh Haughton will work to build up & swift and efficient fighting ma- chine that will be able to. overcome Yale's veteran eleven. The victory over Yale last year has mbued every man h confidence, and Harvapd supporters expect the coming season to be one of the most notable In history. The schedule for this year comprises nine games, one les than last season. The Springfield Training school game has been cut out, and Cornell has been substituted for the Carlisle Indians. Comell will _make its first appear- ance in the Stadium for seven years on Nov, §. The Ithaca boys take Car- 1iele’s place in the schedule, and are Mkely t& give Harvard a harder battle than the Indians could put up, for Carlisle has never succeeded in win- ning more than one game from -the Cgimson, While Cornell may be more nearly a 'match for Harvard than Carlisle, how- ever, universal regret is expresed, among football lovers that the Indians are not to. play in Cambridge this fall. The Carlisle game has always been one of the bigest attractions on the schedule, for the Redskins know the game from beginning to end. Harvard has lost more men through graduation and_other causes than Yale. Nourse, tI» Crimson crack cen- ter; Captain Burr and Hoar, the two guards; €rowley, White, Kennard, Ver Wiebe and Cutler will not return to college this year, and Coach Haughton has a big problem before him to build up a line than can conquer the Blue's fighting machine. Captain Fish, who has been spending his vacation on the Hudson, arrived in Cambridge Sunday. As yet he is about the only man in sight for tackle. Can- didates for the backfield are numer- ous, and the development of the ends and backs ought not to prove difficult. ATTORNEYS AT LAW. Now that Captain Burr has left col- lege Henry Sprague, the dark horse who saved the Yale game for the Crim- son last year by making a 58-yard punt from behind his goal line, is the Dbest punter in the squad. Last year he was kept out of the game most of the time by an injury to his knee, from which he never fully recovered, but if he is in good condition this_fall he seems to be the logical choice for ou estimates and our work will be done in a first-class a reasonable figure. French, McConnell, Smith, for Washington Unglaub. - McBride: the Cramberry lot, DISCRIMINATING LADIES, DULL TRADING IN STOCKS. — Few Remaining Traces of Feveri ne Union Pacific Movement. " New York, Sept. 13.—The dull trad- ing and the narrowing price fluctua- tions in today’s stock market marked the pormal rate of subsidence from the violent contortions of the adjust- ment of last week's leading event. No one supposed that the death of a cap- italist of Mr. Harimam's power and grasp contained any positive force for beiterment of values of securities. The early termination of the headlong ad- vance of Friday was expected, there- fore, and the agency of the uncovered short interest in causing it was quite justly recognized. The reactionary tendency which developed on Saturday was pushed by various professional de- vices today in.the effort to widen the spring of the price movement, on which professional trading profits de- pends. The growing exhaustion of last week's powerful motive forces was manifest in the restriction of the re action and the later fluttering vibra- tions of prices. Such action repre- sents the setting down of the market to await new developments. The re- maining traces of feverishness in the movement of Union Pacific were' ac- countable by the steps taken towards the continuity of its administration and to some of the rumors bearing on the future policy of the vast interests and the powerful influences thus in- volved. The prompt election of new members of the board of directors and of the executive committee was regarded as intended to put a stop to some of the rumors of aleged contem- plated changes. The expectation that a member of J. P. Morgan & Co. was to be admitted to the board was thus disappointed. The disturbance of sen- timent reported from London as due to rumors of antagonism between powerful banking interests was sup- posed to be connected with this sub- ject. London also took an unfavorable view of our monetary outlook and was disquieted, as” well, by the American copper stfcs as showing a rate of praduction, still running heavily in ex- cess of consumption. The relative po- sition of United States Steel and Amal- gamated Copper, which changed on Saturday when the former rose above the latter for this time, was unaltered today. The unsettlement fn the mar- ket was aggravated by rumors that embarrassments of brokerage houses was threatened as & consequence of the violent fluctuations of the recen: past. - The denial of these rumors gave the market its show of strength du ipg the mid-session. but a fresh rea; tlon in Union Pacific later proved its influence on the general list still main- tained. - The complexion of.the week- Iy bank statement, published after the market closed on Saturday, came in for much diseussion and prepared sen- timent for a‘ future hardening of money, rates. While firmer rates ars quite ~generaily expected, bankers do not anticipate tight money markets this fall, in spite of the narrow mar- gin of the surplus reserve of the at present. A rise in Chicago e nge to twenty cents discount per $1, was a development of the day, but the tide of the currency movement is strongly towards the interior. ‘In London, Russian competition for the gold arrriving caused & sharp jump in the marflet price. . In-the local money market the feature was an active de- mand for money carrying over the end of the year, for which 4 1-4 per cent. was paid. There is an increasing sup- ply, also, of commercial paper and prime grades for the regular maturi- ties were marked up to 4 and § per cent. The range for call loans was not changed, but, some of the banks are said to be calling loans. The fall in Union Pacific, allowing for the div- ident off today, carried it off 7 3-8 from the high point of the rally touch- ed on Suturday. The closing of the boooks today for the coming annual meeting ends any demand for repre- sentation at that meetin Bonds were weak. Total sales, par value, $3,556,000.
