Hospital vs, Lafayette A. C. of Taft- ville. Westerly Planning Warm Reception for C. A. Cs. Westerly rooters are enthusiastic when it comes to baseball so that the Norwich C. A. C. team which goes to Vose park this afternoon for a game with Westerly is assured of a crowd that will put them on their mettle to play their best. Westerly at present is leading the league and the home rooters don’t intend that their nine shall lose any game if support from the fans can save it, so that the Westerly management is preparing to receive the biggest crowd of the sea- son. But the Norwich team doesn't in- tend to be frightened out by a little enthusiasm on the part of Westerly and is going down with the do-or-die spirit to make up for the defeat .of rast Saturday. Capt. Tim Sullivan ex- pects to start for Block Island Mon- ! day, where he will spend the summer, 80 that this will be his last game with the team. Frank Kane, the new man- ager, will call a meeting after the game for the election of a new cap- tain. © He will institute a few shifts in the positions for the game this afternoon and have Marra and Houli- han as the battery. Big Dan is said to be at his best form and as he was a puzzle to Westerly a week ago he can be expected to keep the crop of base hits and runs down to the min- imum today. The boys will be in the hunt all the way from the drop of the hat and expect to make this the first step in a climb up the ladder for a top position in the league. American Association Race Closest. Louisville, July 16.—The race for. the American association 1909 pennant is most remarkably close. Between Mil- waukee at the head and Kansas City at the foot of the league are but 64 points difference in percentage. The first six clubs are so bunched that the loss of a game or two would make the leaders segond division members and those in gixth place in the van. An illustration of the closeness of the race is given by comparison with other leagues. In the National league there are 451 points between Pittsburg and Boston, first and last; while be- tween Pittsburg and Chicago, first and second, -are 75 points, eleven more than separate the tail enders and the leaders in the association. Between the first and last of the American league is a dreary waste of 334 points. Clash to Settle Mooted Question. Manager Farrell's Hospital team and the Lafayette A. C. get together this afternoon at the Hospital in a game that will settle the disputed merits of the two teams, which has been an unsettled question, especially with the Lafayettes’, since a game they played this spring. With the Hospitals in the lead a dispute arose and the La- fayettes left the field. Now they will settle the question by nine innings of play. Tt looks like a defeat for the Taftville crowd, as the Hospitals are just now in top notch form and show- ing the most consistent ball of any local team. Davy Altizer Roasted by Rooters. Poor Davy Altizer is getting his in Chicago for holding the ball too long in Monday's game ahd allowing sey- eral men to sgore and run away with the game. Here is what the Chicago Tribune says of him: “Men have been hanged by the neck until they were dead for less than Dare Devil David did Monday, and an umpire who made as costly' a mistake against the home teamr; would need” police escort to a padded cell; but becanse he is such a dare: devil, the south side rooters let Altizer escape unharmed, but marked for life as was Cain, son of Adam, and brother of Abel.” Two. s in the Game.
