H. Hoffstot 912 Factory Bldg., Kansas City, Mo. BY OLIVER S: MORRIS EDITOR Sy / It isn’t customary, I believe, for business men, or even editors; to go out of their way to boost a rival business, or.a rival publication. “Blow your own horn and the devil take the hindmost” seems to be the proper slogan in the. publication, ag well as in any other kind, of business. " But I hope that the Leader will be pardoned if it violates this estabhshed pxece of “busmess ethics” in this week’s advertlsmg talk. We did not say in our articles and comment; regardmg the farm paper con- spiracy to keep up machinery. prices that Farm, Stock and Home of Minneap- olis was a member of the Agncultural Publishers’ association, the agency. papers. We do not owe Farm, Stock and Home_an apology. ' Therefore, when we mention here that this farm paper withdrew from the Agricultural Pub- lishers’ association some time ago, and had no part in deceiving farmers about prices, it is simply *e give credit where credit is due. The Leader goes on the theory that its readers ought to know the good as well as the bad publi-ations. With Mr. H. N. Owen, publisher of Farm, Stock and'HOme, we frequ:zntly differ, but his paper has given evidence to date that it is “not in the trust,” both by mthdrawmg from the publishers’ association and by the evidence of independence it shows in its editorial columns. - For this attitude Mr. Owen has been boycotted by some advertisers. Like the Leader, Farm, Stock and Home is not getting its fair share of advertising. The Leader is not the only paper that suffers by being fearless and independent. The Leader is not the only paper that the reading public should support by supporting its ad ertisers, and thereby proving to advertxsers that it PAYS to be on the square with honest publications. Our readers ‘are supporting us nobly in this fight. By buying of those business men who use the advertising columns of the independent press-and who thereby demonstrate that they do not seek unfairly to influence the press, readers are doing their bit to establish a free press in America on a firm basis. This applies to all independent publications as well as the Leader, The other day it was suggested to me that the Leader show in a substan- tial way how it appreciates those readers who are helpmg in this fight. There- fore I am going to make this offer: To every. reader who writes a letter to any advertiser who uses some 1mp. / dl:nd yuurtnsmg anu sddt;;aueg i our as the supply lasts, an original cartoon drawing by Baar or Morris, for frammg.
