League organization work is progressing splendidly in this (King) county, Wash. JOHN CARMICHAEL. Seattle, Wash. This is Mr. Carmichael’s song: THE SPIRIT OF 1920 Sung to tune of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” (John Brown’s Body) Having once beheld the glory Of a people brave and free, We will never be contented With industrial slavery. So we’re marching on to victory From the prairies to the sea; Yes, we are marching on. Refrain We’ll make old Hiram Cost of Living, We’ll make old Hiram Cost of Living, We’ll make old Hiram Cost of Living Take off his hat to us. Sure the farmers of Dakota, They have blazed a wondrous trail, While we follow in their footsteps There is no such word as fail, Summer And the profiteering pirates Will send up a bitter wail As we go marching on. (Refrain) We will vote no more for lawyers, We will vote no more for crooks, Or for crooked politicians Who have cluttered up our books With a thousand useless measures That are only good for looks, As we go marching on. (Refrain) There’ll be bread for all the workers, There’ll be milk for every “kid,” And the profiteers can hunger, To the feast they’ll get no bid; For the crimes that they’ve committed No longer can be hid, As we go marching on. (Refrain) “Ye shall know the truth, my people, And the truth shall make you free.” It was thus in solemn earnest Spoke the man of Galilee, “Whatsoe’er ye do to others Ye have also done to me,” As we go marching on. (Refrain) Doctor Shipstead on ‘“‘Americanism” People’s Choice for Governor of Minnesota Makes Ringing OCTOR HENRIK SHIP- STEAD, choice of the conventions- of the Non- partisan league and Working People’s Non- partisan Political league for governor of Minnesota, issued the following statement of principles upon making his official filing for office at the state capitol: “The farmers and workers of Min- nesota, and by workers I mean all peo- ple who work with brain and hand, have made me their candidate for gov- ernor in their fight to restore to the people of Minnesota and the United States their sacred inheritance—the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. Actual toilers have found something placing itself between them and the products of their toil to such a degree that they can bear it no longer, so they began, two years ago, in a peaceful manner, to meet and take counsel together and to act along the lines laid down in those documents which are the painfully- evolved life principles of the northern races; in peace, if possible, to change the bur- dens so that they might be borne. “Exercising our time-honored right of freedom of speech, we were stop- ped; our freedom of assembly hin- dered; our freedom of the press partly denied, and our freedom of movement and the ballot at times denied or made nugatory. Like the old colonists we find ourselves governed by public offi- cials who have arrogated to them- selves unlimited powers of autocracy, inconsistent with the law and the Constitution. We have seen our fel- lows driven from their homes—tarred and feathered by mobs because of their opinions and their speech and their efforts to organize into perfectly peaceful organizations to consult to- gether about how to help each other to remove or carry their burdens. “And now again we are seeking the same things; employing the same law- ful methods; placing our case before the people of Minnesota firm in our faith that if given a fair hearing the truth and justice of our cause will compel a favorable verdict at the bar Statement of Principles of public opinion. We hope that we shall win. If we do we shall not use the power of the government to op- press others. We shall restore the Minnesota that-we knew—the Ameri- canism that we love. We shall not re- turn evil for evil. good for evil, in this: that we shall deprive bf their powers those people who have been heaping their own | proper burdens upon others. We shall deprive the few of the power they possess, in special privilege, to prof- iteer upon the many. We shall show them that one’s own burdens are suf- ficient and when properly borne are blessed. In defeat we have been pa- tient. In victory we shall be just. This is a spirit worthy of American traditions. This is America as we have dreamed it. This is America as we hope to make it.” ADVERTISEMENTS 200-ACRE FARM Located three miles from South St. Paul and one mile from the Farmers’ Termi- nal Packing plant. 160 acres of splen- did soil under cultivation; 40 acres of good pasture ; T-room house; barn, 40x60 feet; silo; hog house; chicken coop; machine shed: granary; cream house; windmill, Price, $210 per acre; $8,000 cash ; balance on easy terms.
