ey \ 4 Q 4 w? PEAT FOR BEDDING The experiment station at Grand Rapids, Minn., has been making’ suc- cessful use of peat for bedding pur- poses for four years and finds it su- perior to straw in some respects. Dairymen in Denmark, Norway and Sweden make great use of it for this purpose, and it was there that the Minnesota experts got the idea. The advantages are summed up-as fol- lows: “We have used the peat litter at the North Central station for four years now and have found it superior to straw as an absorbent. Our cattle were never so clean before. Not only has the manure output doubled but all the straw produced at the station is available for feeding purposes.” The peat, of course, has to be dried before use and a paying method has to be found for digging it. After some experimentation the Grand Rapids station adopted the following method: - A disk is used to cut down four to six inches. This breaks up the peat on the ground and after it has had time to dry out somewhat it can be hauled in. Two men and a team work- ing a week hauled in enough to bed 120 head of cattle during the stabling period. POULTRY AND GRASSHOPPERS The prairie chickens are going with the buffalo and we must substitute domestic fowls for the wild ones. Flocks of turkeys and guineas will consume millions of hoppers during the season and other insect pesis that the wild game birds held in check. Doubtless if we had more flocks of prairie chickens, sage hens and grouse on our prairies we would be able to save in grasshopper poison. The young poults and guineas will get fat and strong on the young grass- hoppers, as they grow older they will | receive the abundant exercise neces- sary for the proper conditioning by chasing the hoppers which have grown older and are able to cover distance through the air. Three old turkeys kept over winter will produce a flock of turkeys the next season which will keep the fields near the house free from grasshop- pers. ‘ } ADVERTISEMENTS We Pay Six Per Cent Interest on certificates of deposit for 6 or 12 months.
