The recent reversal of policy on the part of the American Legion, which is now seeking to get a bonus for re- turned soldiers, proves to be due to a general revolt of a number of pro- gressive state organizations, headed by Michigan, against the national of- ficers. - Besides compelling the nation- al officers to reverse themselves on the bonus question, the insurgents complained against the propaganda use that was being made of the Amer- ican Legion Weekly, forcing the res- ignation of the editor, Lieutenant Colo- nel George White, one of the original organizers of the Legion, and compel- ling a complete change in the policy and style of the paper. IOWA b The Greater Iowa association is at- . tempting to prevent the Committee of Forty-Eight from organizing in this state, making the same fight against them that was made against: the League. Exactly the same charges are being brought against the 48ers that were made against the League. They are charged with favoring free love and bolsheyism and attacking the American Legion. The 48ers are fight- ing back against the Greater Iowa as- sociation, which is financed by profi- teering business interests. MISSOURI The St. Louis post of the American Legion, members of which attempted to stop the recent convention of the Committee of Forty-Eight on the ground that the Nonpartisan league was to be represented at the meeting, upon investigating the League has given it a clean bill of health, stating that it is working to bring about re- forms by orderly and constitutional methods. The post announced that it will continue to fight “radicals” who preach violence. WISCONSIN Leaders of the American Society of Equity from 15 counties recently de- manded the resignation of J. N. Tit- temore, presment and J. Alex Ray- burn as vice president. The anti-Tit- temore group objects to the proposed affiliation of the Equity with the Bloodgood and Earling interests. The anti-Tittemore faction scored a decid- ed victory in the election of Represen- _ tative J. C. Hanson as president of the Dane county union over H. B. Fargo, Tittemore candidate. MONTANA President A. C. Townley of the Nonpartisan league and Governor Lynn J. Frazier of North Dakota re- ceived tremendous ovations and spoke to capacity audiences at the co-oper- ators’ congress meetings in Great Falls. ) The State Federation of Labor has adopted resolutions indorsing the Non- partisan league but condemning the present leadership of the American Federation of Labor for reactionary polxeles SAWDUST AS FERTILIZER Editor Nonpartisan Leader: I have found from experience that sawdust used directly on the land is a very ‘poor fertilizer, but it is valuable for bedding livestock. When used this way it decays quickly, absorbs the droppings and forms a good fertilizer. Spread the mixture about the place as you do any animal manure. Heathsville, Va. - F.G. B. FORD AND NEWBERRY Editor Nonpartisan Leader: I can net help but make a few comments on the so-famous Newberry trial in Mich~ igan, because it strikes a key which sounds so familiar to something we Have heard for the last two and a half years or more. We all know Henry Ford’s war record, how he gave over to the government’s use his large fac- tories without a cent profit, while Mr. Newberry put up as his defense, in the federal court, that he thought it to be his “patriotic duty” to use all means to elect himself on his super-patriot- ism. Can you beat it? The New- berry type of patriotism will at.least prove to be rather expensive to the state of Michigan and it only goes to show, once more, that the false cry of patriotism is a scoundrel’s last ref- _uge.
