Big Money for thegro%!a‘rf tvyas d h ”lt Clover in Idaho P;oceeds of $9,090 on a Forty- Acre Farm DITOR Nonpartisan Lead- il er: I am an enthusiastic reader of the Leader and member of the League. 1 read the ar- ticle about Mr. Furu- seth’s clover seed crop. That was certainly good. I am also a booster for my state—Idaho—and especiaily the government-owned Minidoka proj- ‘ect, of which I am a resident. ' I have a neighbor who had 40 acres of clover which he cut for-seed that yielded a trifle over seven. bushels, or: 425 pounds,, per acre, which he sold at 48 cents per pound, or $204'per acre. He sold the straw for $7 per ton, which brought $12 per acre, and cut about 1,000 pounds of good hay, which at present prices is worth $11.25, making $227.26 per acre, or a total for the 40 acres of $9,090, and this was an off season, as everybody knows: The League is prospering in this state and we are going to show them a warm time this fall. I. G. CLAYVILLE. Rupert, Idaho. THE UNDERNOURISHED CHILD Children require a foundation of good health, made by adequate nour- ishment, but many of them in this country are not laying this foundation. The United States department of agri- culture is assisting the ‘various agen- cies working to correct this condition. Undernourishment is not confined to the slums. Many a little Tony or Pietro, with his bowl of thick soup and hunk of dry bread, topped off with an apple or an orange, is better fed than" numbers of children in well-to-do The latter are too often al- lowed to choose what they will or will not eat, and to select food badly suited to a child’s stomach or that is lacking in nourishment. if- their parents, because of poverty, were obliged to give them too.scanty a ration. Soggy breads, fried meats, fried potatoes and heavy pie are re- sponsible for many underfed children. Milk is absolutely necessary to keep the growing child in health. ‘It con- tains growth-producing substances not found in any other food. The dairy division of the department of agricul- ture is endeavoring to drive this les- son home to the people in every state by means of charts, lectures and ex- hibits. = The home demonstration. agents, supervised by the department of agriculture and state colleges, are also teaching the value of milk in a child’s diet and how to select a proper meal for a growing boy or girl. Chil- dren who 'have beén given even one pint of milk every school day for-two months have made remarkable gains in every instance. PUBLIC AFFAIRS, NOT RECIPES Editor Nonpartisan Leader: By all means let the woman’s page be de- voted to discussion of what women can do in public affairs and not recipes for apple pies. We-all have enough and more than enough of recipes and household hints but so many take it for granted that that is the only thing . a woman can or ought to be interested in. All women are not cut out to be cooks any more than all men are cut out to be carpenters. or blacksmiths, but most of us. married women have to be cooks whether we like it or not. Please give us a change in the Non- | partisan Leader at least. MARGARET JOHNSON. You have found, no doubt, that brushed teeth still dis- color and decay. The methods you use are inadequate. There is now a better way. The cause of most tooth troubles is a film. It is ever- present, ever-forming. You can feel it with your tongue. That film is what discol- ors—not the teeth. It is the basis of tartar. It holds food substance which ferments and forms acid. It holds the acid in contact with the teeth to cause decay. Millions of germs breed in it. They, witlr tartar, are the chief cause of pyorrhea. That film is clinging. If gets into crevices and stays. .- U.S. So, despite your brushing, it may do a ceaseless damage. Teeth are safer, whiter and cleaner if that film is absent. Science Now Combats It Dental science, after years of searching, has found a way to combat film. Years of care- ful tests under able author- ities have amply proved its efficiency. Now leading den- tists all over America are urg- _ ing its adoption. It is now used daily on millions of teeth. This film combatant is em- bodied in a dentifrice called Pepsodent. And a 10-Day Tube is offered to every home for testing, Pepsodent is based on pep- sin, the digestant of albumin. The film is albuminous mat- ter. ‘The object of Pepsodent is to dissolve it, then to day by day combat it. For long this method seemed impossible. Pepsin must be activated, and the usual agent is an acid harm- ful to the teeth. But science has discovered a harmless ac- tivating method. And that discovery opens a-new teeth- cleaning era. The results are quickly ap- parent. A ten-day test is con- .- vincing. We urge you to make it at our cost and learn what clean teeth mean. Lest you forget, cut out the cou- pon now, PAT.OFF.
